Paging veteran Denverites: Mr. Warburton, etc

I've just discovered a relative. His name is John T. Carroll; a trumpet player. He performed/recorded with Stan Kenton in the mid-40's, then later with Frank Sinatra, Benny Carter, Max Roach and likely a host of others. I understand that he settled in Denver where he taught as well as performed with the Denver Symphony. He passed away in 1968. Anyone aware of any anecdotal info, recordings, pictures, etc? I'll be in Denver mid-August visiting my son and would love to know more of this hep-cat.

Thumbs up

I do remember John. Legendary lead player around here. Didn't know him well and can't offer much except to call the musicians union......

There's an old trumpet player here named Gordon Dooley who was a big band leader back then.....the union might hook you up with him.
Good luck.

wow!

I wasn't terribly optimistic I'd be able to connect the dots, as knowledge of my heritage has been spotty at best with mostly dead-ends.
I am grateful for this info!
He must have been some kinda heavy cat as Doc Severinsen allegedly played at his funeral.
Thanks Paul.

There is a Denver Jazz Club that should be helpful. Most of the members are older than dirt. (But you didn't hear that from me.)

I'd refer you to Bill Clark, leader of the Queen City Jazz Band but I'm pretty sure he'll be in Europe then. You might be able to catch him now though as I know they haven't left yet. (My daughter plays in one of his college bands: The UC Denver Claim Jumpers)

Man, I'm old, but those people are on a whole other level of old. Moldy fig city.
Bill Clark studied bass with me many years ago.
John was a great lead big band trumpet player....nothing more, nothing less.
