You're content with your box and I'm happy for you. I'm also happy for me and Ray cause it kind of insures that you're not gonna be able to climb into our box.
AARON- I hope you got some answers that spoke to your need.
I'm done. | Ed -- I did. If nothing else, it kind of reinforced my desire to move to a big city (Toronto, and eventually NYC even if only for a couple years.) Even though I don't mind the slab at all, I agree that it's not speaking to me like it once did. I can feel my slab chops starting to slip, and to be honest, I really don't feel the need to sacrifice time on the doghouse to maintain them. Double thumbing and fretless contrapuntal tapping just don't seem all that important anymore -- and it's felt like that way for a few months now.

That's my LaScala with a set of spiro starks with the E string detuned down to D just for that tune. Much as I love the way the dominants sound on this bass, they don't handle that detuning as well as the stark E. |

I thought starks would have a tighter sound... like the Dominants. It is a very good funk tone for upright... perhaps the best I've heard for that context.
The only thing about the recording I'm not sure I love is the recorded drum kit sound. How was that done? It doesn't fit in with the rest of the soundscape... the bass and piano have a very defined place in the mix, but the kit is... I dunno, it's almost hollow, or distant, or maybe just unbalanced. Was your drummer recorded from far away? Only one mic on the kit? One mic hanging from above?
Anyway, thread derailment is bad. I'm just too tired to function normally this past week or so. My 15 page research paper (started Friday) on the literary misrepresentation of ancient Roman slavery is almost done.... Then shall I sleep.

I think that to double or not is just as much of an artistic choice. Will it get you more work? I don't know, bass players will probably debate that for generations to come. However, look at many of the brightest stars for the bass worlds today; Pattituchi, McBride and Bromberg all double but its because they want to. I don't think Christian mcBride would be begging for spare change at Gray's Papaya if he didn't play BG!! On the other hand, I don't think John Clayton or the late Percy Heath ever played BG.
I don't play BG anymore because frankly, I'm lazy. Sure I could practice BG instead of watching TV or going on Talkbass but I don't feel like it. The instrument doesn't feel right to me, doesn't speak to me and because I'm a student and I don't have to support myself the choice is mine to make. Its all a matter of choice and everyone has their own reason. |

I pick it up from time to time but don't like the sound or feel of the instrument anymore (my taste). I still love to hear someone who can rock the BG, but I can't anymore (if I ever could). So I don't play it. |

-Marco | Well then I stand corrected, but my point was that you can have an excellent career, doubling or not. |

I just listened to a recording of Mike Flynn playing in a BG/piano duo over in BG's Recordings forum. I'm afraid I won't be giving the plank up quite yet!
PS: That's probably a good thing, as I'm putting the last $140 (out of $1150) on a new slab in the first week of February!
