Removing bass from a track

Anyone have any luck using Audacity or something else free to remove the bass from a track to make your own play a long?

I don't think it's possible. You'd be removing an entire track, which from an mp3 or whatever is impossible since it's all mixed down into one track.

Might rolling off the bass frequencies work to an extent? The bass would be there, only really quiet.

I've tried rolling off the bass.... but then you lose the kick drum. I'd be interested in any success stories though.

Try notching out some frequencies. If you use a parametric eq, and sweep around you may find a spot that makes the bass less present, but saves the kick. It might not be where you think it is (try a little higher than the typical bass range) and it'll all depend on how separated the two are in the mix.
