RIP ARVELL SHAW

Arvell Shaw passed last Thursday. For those that don't know, Arvell was Satchmo's bassist appearing on EVERY Louis record from 1945 on till Louis died in 1971. He also appeared in seven pretty big movies alongside Armstrong.
I had the pleasure of meeting Arvell-in fact he was the first double bassist I ever saw in person. Arvell was the house bassist for a good while at a local institution called Sonny's Place, Long Islands best jazz club owned by Sonny Meyorwitz. I used to go see him every Thursday nite. He had a fabulous sound and was a very sweet cat. At the time I was a guitar player and the only bass playing I knew was Stanley Clarkes'. I didn't know how lucky I was at the time to be hearing a player of that heavitude.
Arvell Shaw lived a large life.
RIP

I feel kinda strange and sad....
I saw Arvell here in Switzerland last july at the New Orleans Jazz Ascona Festival.....
I talked with him for a while and he was such a great man ....nice, big sound, big notes......
"Now you has Jazz" one of my all time favorites...
i even got the video from the " High society" movie.
R.I.P. Arvell....
