Although he was more active on the 2xbasslist than here, those who knew who were really blessed by this true gentleman of bass.
Bob was a great guy.
Little story to show you his generosity:
A few years ago I was flying to Colorado to a family reunion. The family was disappointed I couldn't bring my bass due to the hassles of flying with an upright. Although I'm a jazzer, several in my family play instruments in the old bluegrass/ traditional/ roots style, and my uncle was going to record it to make a cd for my grandparents.
I asked if anyone knew of a bass to rent in Denver and Bob stepped up to loan me his fine Morelli for a ridiculously nominal amount and threw in a copy of the out of print Bob Haggart's bass method book.
I was honored to get to play that bass that he had loaned to a ton of big names playing concerts around Denver.
RIP Bob.

I think I made a deal with him several years ago. (strings IIRC)
He had a thread to sell his Morelli here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showth...t=#post2883087

I will miss him dearly.
His son Brian is Tom Jones' guitarist and musical director.

Prolly be alotta crazed bass players there. I'm not in that particular category but will be there. I am a bass player though.
Bob's Morelli will be there for anybody who chooses not to bring their bass.

Many people I hadn't seen in years. Brian Monroney and some folks were up there playing "Quiet Nights" without the bass so I asked my buddy, the fine Denver bassist Mike Fitzmaurice to come up with me to help me set up the amp sound for the bass so I could play with them. It was nice, but Bob had let many players use the Morelli before he passed and nobody had bothered to clean off the fingerboard and it was rather hard to play through all the built up muck on the board. I hate that. Plus, my bass is a fiver with the low B and I did that typical thing of not feeling the B beneath the E to land on with my right plucker, so that I became confused about what string I was fingering on and what string I was plucking. I was brilliant as usual though.
I told Mike we should do a two bass hit in Bob's memory so we did O.P.'s "Black Eyed Peas and Collard Greens" (Blues in the Closet". Being my pushyownself I took over the role as MC and asked if anybody knew who Oscar Pettiford was out there, except that one table with Bob Ross....nope. I felt a jazz bass history lesson coming on but Mike gave me a dirty look so I dint. : Mike played the melody, I played the harmony part with Brian playing rhythm guitar. Then we played "Might As Well Be Spring" as a Bossa with Mike bowing the head and me playing the bass part.
Anyway, it was a nice evening.....fitting for a beloved member of the Denver music community.
Oh, yeah.... one nice older couple came up to me after and said "We used to hear you with Johnny Smith at "Shaners" back in the 60's. We thought you were dead". I dint know what the hell to say to that.

I loved Pogo, Jake. That was some funny, sometimes, brilliant ****.
EDIT: My Mom told me about it.

EDIT: My Mom told me about it. | Yeah right! I was raised on Pogo and The Goon Show - savage political and social satire from both England and the USA. I still have a copy somewhere around here of 'I Go Pogo' where Pogo runs for the gummint - probably as relevant to the political process today as it was then. |
