Rochester, New York

I live way up in the Adirondacks. The boonies. I will be visiting family this weekend and I need to get some strings. Where can I find a good selection of upright bass strings in that town? Thanks.

I go to Eastman in Rochester... head over to Fairport (exit 26 I think on the 490) to Student String Shop, 52 N. Main Street, Fairport NY. It's run by Paul strelau and 2 other eastman graduates

Student String Shop

I'm not sure about weekend hours (especially on the upcoming holiday weekend!), but the only place I can think of offhand is the String Shop in Fairport. They're the home-base for distribution of Shen basses, and the luthiers in that shop are top-notch, and great guys. I know they stock Helicores & Obligatos, but I'm sure they have other stuff too. What they've actually got in-store is another matter. We don't really have an super-duper, amazingly-stocked DB store in town, unfortunately.

Anyway, give them a call (1-888-600-8559) this week before you head in here, and ask them what kind of strings they've got kicking around the shop. Good hunting!

You beat me to it by mere seconds!

So there you have it... two bassists in Rochester (one of them an Eastman SOM student!) highly recommend Paul Strelau's shop. Call 'em!

Why don't you order the strings from Lemur Music online and have them sent to the address ahead of your departure?

Hmm, yes... good question. Or why not order them from Lemur or (All Hail) Bob G. and have them shipped to your address up in the North Country? Is it a matter of lack of luthiers in your vicinity to install the strings? I love the Adirondacks, and I go up that way as often as possible, but I'm not really up on if there are any decent luthiers within a reasonable drive.

I just had a peek at your town on Google Maps. It's not really too far from Burlington, VT. There's at least one violin store there, so it'd be worth giving them a call. If you can't get some strings in Rochester this weekend, then Burlington is only a bit over an hour's drive from you. Just a thought!

Good luck with the strings!
