I play in a big band with a really bad piano player, and a suspect drummer. So for 3 tunes, I had a great time playing with this jazz legend. You take your joys when you can get them....
Edit: that's a Lakeberg and Baer bass - 7/8 body with a 3/4 scale. Really nice bass (which unfortunately belongs to the US Government....)

I saw some of the Air Force band playing brass-band stuff outside of the Jazz Park last Sunday. I don't know if you were on the gig (I think they had a brass bass) but they were some great players. Wish I would have caught the big-band. Glad to see you had a good time in New Orleans.

Prolly shouldn't joke with a guy who could snap my little jazz bassist neck with one hand. Good goin', Jon... I love how Ellis plays. Maybe my favorite Marsalis, now that I think of it.
Nice bass, too. |

You're NOT supposed to say that you play with a really bad piano player (at least, not in a forum where the really bad piano player, suspect drummer or authoritarian figures might stumble onto it). You're SUPPOSED to say "I play in a big band that allows me to work really hard to keep track of the other musicians." If pushed, you can add, "the pianist constantly comes up with surprising ideas - ones that I would NEVER have considered on my own..."
(Just trying to help with your career...) |
Shine on that man, my career's fine! I'm moving to Tokyo in a few months, where all I'll be doing is trio work for 3 years, I don't need to worry about hurting figures. Besides, I am the authority figure in the rhythm section!

When you play with cats like that, it's hard not to have some mojo rub off...
(at least that's what I tell myself )
