Like something with just a looper, their upright and maybe singing. There seems to be quite a few people doing it with electric, but i have yet to find an upright player doing this.
I'm interested in exploring this but i was hoping i could find some other people who were already doing it to get some ideas.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Jeff

Probably my favourite for solo DB is Barre Phillips. |

As far as vocal/bass stuff goes, Jay Leonhart has made himself a little niche in that realm. |

Let me revise my question a little. I mentioned the looper as being an 'upper limit' ie. I don't want tons of effects/drum machines/sequences. I should have also mentioned style. I'm aiming for jazz/popular/r&b/folk something in that vein, something that could be played at an open mic or coffee house.
I checked out Barre Philips, while i like it, it's a little too avant guard. Jay Leonhart was more-so in the right direction, the recordings i found seemed a little lounge-ish, but it still gives me some ideas.
Anymore suggestions welcome. |

Can anyone share some more names of recordings or vids where this can be heard and/or seen?

I am not saying you need to love what Barre and half the people on my list do, but if you are looking at wanting to play solo, there is a lot you can learn from them. |

I'm not really sure what your after but these suggestions give you a lot of music to consider. Hey, if it's not here maybe you've tripped upon something unique...be the first to do it!
Good luck |

Check this out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-4SbBDcLh9w is is phenomenal . Check out his other videos, his style of bass playing is up there with one of my favroite bass players of all time: Renaud Garcia-Fons but he's a one man band. Although not the style i was looking for his videos have given me some ideas how to arrange things with a looper so they don't get boring while setting up the loops. |

Anybody know Tom Abbs? A friend I used to play with in NYC - not everybody's bag but he often plays DB, didjeridoo, tuba, foot cymbal(?), champagne poppers, and various other noisemakers... and often all at the same time!
Here's a video of one of his groups, though this sounds like he's sticking to plain old bass here: http://jumparts.org/tomabbs.html | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
