I've decided to start calling it the irregular bass since so many people (including "musicians") ask me if I also play the regular bass (bass guitar).

In America we'd be called "evil doers" or snobs if we used such a fancy shmancy term.

I usually call it a double bass, but unfortunately that's the term that seems the most confusing to laypeople. As Reuben said, at least in this country that's the case.

When I was in the union I called it double bass because most of the heavy players were listed that way in the member directory.

Ebay sure as hell doesn't know. Type "double bass", and you get one BSO and umpteen Neil Peart Signature kick drum pedals.

Oh... and one LaBella Goldentone D string, at the moment.

When a double bass show up on American Idol, then maybe things will change.

They should have a Double Bass American Idol that would clear up the confusion and be amusing.
