From the Strings of Babes

I was just part of a string workshop at Emory University for kids aged 5-12. I composed a piece of music, jazz, for them to perform at the end of the week, for which I was named "Composer in Residence". I must say, I have heard my music performed (and @#$%^#$& on) by many, but there's nothing like hearing it from children, in an orchestra no less.

That's super cool - will there be a recording abailable?

If you don't mind my asking, what guidelines were you given in terms of playability? (Range considerations, key areas, bowings, amount of syncopation . . .) Did you conduct the performance?

I find this fascinating, and would love to start composing simple things for my kid - orchestra.

The kids were skilled from a beginning to intermediate range, so I was limited with what I could do. I made a Quicktime movie, and I may post it soon...as soon as I am sure it's cool with the kids' parents. I played bass. I only had a partial heads-up on what to write, so I figured that I'd stick to the blues form. I highly recommend writing for your kid(s), in particular if it's something that can enhance an area of their playing. One of the kids, aged 5-6, asked if we would be playing swing 8ths or straight, so I had my hands full.
