HI! i have a jammed and swollen thumb that happened during gym today..and i have an all-state audition tomorrow for double bass! is there any old-bassist remedy for this? like dip it in warm melted rosin? or rub it in some sort of chinese herb? i really have to get it fixed because my piece involves alot of thumb position and it really hurts to play..

Umm...play an orchestral excerpt?

In all seriousness, don't play until tomorrow. Give it a rest.

R.I.C.E.

Rest - don't play

Ice - 3 times a day, 20 minutes at a time or until you can't feel the cold, w/ a light cloth between your hand and the ice bag.

Compression - ACE bandage if you have one, not too tight.

Elevation - keep it elevated when you sleep or are resting.

Also, 2 Motrin/Ibproprin (sp) tonight and in the morning.

Tape it with athletic tape and take two Motrin before the audition.

I have two children who are soccer goalies. They've had a few jammed thumbs over the years.
