Traveling on an Amtrak train with bass in tow?

Hey guys and gals,
does anyone have any experience traveling on an Amtrak train with a bass in tow? I'll have to get to Delaware for a festival and need to know whether a second seat should be bought, or if there's a luggage area in each car that would accommodate the bass. My gut feeling tells me I'd be better off traveling with my hardshell case. Please advise if you've had a similar experience.

Marco,

I had a decapitated bass by checking my bass as luggage, in a crappy canvas bag. The insurance money worked out pretty well for me, but it was traumatic nonetheless.

I think whether there's a passenger-accessible area in each car depends on whether you're east or west of Chicago--if I remember the western cars are double-deckers and have those storage areas available, but I don't think the eastern ones do.

If I had to do it again, I would probably opt for the hard case, and at least attempt to store it myself rather than check it.

I did the NYC to DC shuttle and had no problems stashing the bass in the Mooradian (at the time) in the luggage area in the back of the car. I sat in the nearest backward facing seat I could and watched my bass the whole time. No problems. Get to the train as early as you can....

I took a Dean guitar in a hardshell inside of a formed cardboard box all the way from Raleigh to Fullerton. I also kept a keen eye on it, telling the porters what it was and to please not crush it. I did not check it as baggage either.

thanks guys!

Dear Jeff, Ed and Rattman,
thanks a lot for the advice, very useful indeed. I think I will be traveling with my bass trunk, just in case.

P.S. Ed, keep me posted on those Sofia dates... sooner or later, I will be showing up if I am not working. It's quite a shame that we have never met in person in my (almost) 5 years of living in NYC!

I took Amtrak from Oakland to Seattle, It actually took 3hrs longer than to fly from SF to Munich and take a train to Linz, Austria.
Anyway, I was able to find a seat my bass could fit behind, and bungy corded it in. It was a nice a trip.
