Traveling With The Double Bass

Has anyone on here ever taken their beloved string bass on an Amtrak train? I am in college so right now I am home in central PA for the winter break and have no car. I have taken my bass on mass transit busses and subways in Philly but not on a long distant train ride. I know i will never get it on greyhound either. If someone has taken their bass on a train i would like to know how they did it. Did you stow it where people put there big bags? (which is usually full when i take the train twice a month) or did you buy an extra seat? ANY and ALL advice is extremely helpful.

Thanks Alot!

P.S. my mom can't take me home because she is doing a small tour in central florida this year.

I did once, years ago. I sat in the last row, and bungy corded it to the back of my seat.
It was a long ride - Bay Area to Seattle.

amtrack

hi Rockabass,
I took my bass on amtrack last week to play up at Amherst college in Mass. Penn station was a mess but the train itself was fine. Just sit in the front of anyone of the club cars and there is a huge space where you can lay your bass down. Just get there early so you get on the train first and you should have no issues
good luck!

Did you end up doing it? I need to take my bass from Chicago to New Haven in March. If I could avoid buying a second seat, then Amtrak would be a super-affordable (~ $100) option.

Thanks,
Theo
