unusual box attatchment for spanish guitar

My parents were watching classic fmtv and saw some guy with an 8 string spanish guitar but it had what appeared to be an end pin that went from the guitar down to a large wedged shaped box that I assume was to amplify the guitar and probably help the lower string(s) on his guitar be heard. Anyone know what this is called or where I can get more info on it.

I tried a few more google search terms and I found it. It was a guy called Paul Galbraith and here's a pic of his setup

and another one of him in action

I wonder what difference the box makes and if maybe some of its principles could be applied to double bass

I love this guy's work - his playing draws more from the keyboard tradition than the string tradition, IMO. Notice the fanned frets on his guitar.

The "resonance boxes" he uses is custom made, but anyone who plays an endpin-equipped instrument has probably already experienced the phenomenon of acoustic coupling with the floor.
