Vanity

My 19 year old son, a graduate of Crenshaw High in L.A. told me he has a buddy who's an underground rapper. Well, I caught the end of this track as I was driving him to Long Beach City College this morning and realized it contained samples of a recording by Sarah Vaughan. My son Kenji says Blu likes standards. Now my son likes standards. So let me get this straight. This past Saturday night he and Blu were listening to old jazz records records, looking for samples. I don't know whether to kiss him or kill him. Here is one of the tracks, "Vanity". What do you think? Is this O.K. or is it ........well, you know......just plain wrong?

I guess I'm just too old for this ****. I don't care for it, Sarah or not.

Well, I'm 5o (= 1960). I can't speak for you Eric but I think that's the age cut off. I just can't get with the idea of cutting and splicing random parts of an Artist's work to use as a component in a rappers track. I discussed this with my son and he says that's the genre. I suggested that they rap with a jazz band and I got a blank stare. Then he started in with an idea they are working on which uses an uncut recording of "Maybe Tomorrow" by Grant Green and Blu's rap. I quickly suggested he not rap over Grant's solos and try to use SPACE instead of superimposing everything. The drum tracks suck too. They don't need all that. It messes up the rhythm of the rap. It's too dense.

Sounds like what bugs both of us is the rap! I want to hear some music!!! I don't mind and can even appreciate the concept of splicing disparate things together as long as the end result is satisfying musically.

For whatever reason, rapping in general doesn't do it for me.

ive always had a lack of respect for most rappers since they like to "sample" parts of songs. I just dont get it.... I mean if Im writing a new song and the bridge of stairway to heaven sound good for it im not going to just steal the part.
For some reason rappers seem to think that because the samples cross genres it makes it ok.
