Viola da gamba?

OK, this isn't my usual side of the forums (I'm a 5-string electric player), but here goes! Please be kind to me...!

Has anyone here had any experience with the viol/viola da gamba? I REALLY want to be able to play one for some reason, and was hoping someone could give me some advice or something. I already know how to play a little cello and violin, so bowed instruments aren't alien to me.

Also, should I learn treble, bass or tenor viol? Or does it make a huge difference what I learn?

EDIT: I'm putting it here cause chances are that anyone with any experience of viols is likely to play other bowed instruments, including DB. Most violists I've met are also violinists/cellists/DBers.
