Talking Warburton/Grusin.

This Saturday at Dazzle in Denver. 7 & 9.
With Jill Fredericksen on drums.

Don Grusin and I grew up together here in the Denver area. We played as teenagers together. In the 60's we worked with the likes of Jim Hall, Zoot Sims and Carl Fontana together.
Dave Grusin was one of my musical uncles.
Jill frederickson is a fine drummer and is known as "The Queen of the Samba" in these parts.
Nothing slick on this one.....no rehearsing....just calling some tunes that we know.

A band I was in opened many times on the road for Lee Ritenour's group with Don Grusin, Abe Laboriel, Alex Acuna and Ernie Watts. Good guys and great players. Wish I could be there, Paul.

Yeah, Eric....those guys can play.
Don's a laugh riot. We just talked some tunes over on the phone. I got a great compliment from his brother Dave through Don. Don told him we were doing this thing together and he said Dave said...."You son of a bitch, why do you get to play with Paul and not me?" Don said..."Hey, you do your thing and I do mine."
Funny, because Don was always compared to Dave in terms of success and Don was always very clear about doing his own thing and not letting anybody think he was riding on Dave's coat-tails.
I sure can live with a stroke like that from an Academy Award winning composer.
