Wayne Shorter at Massey Hall, April 5th!

I heard about this from a sax player yesterday and I just checked the Massey Hall site. He's doing a duo show with his group, and then a solo piano set by Brad Mehldau!

So...who else is going?!

Yeah, it's his quartet. By duo show, I meant that his group and Mehldau are both playing.

Yeah, what's up with that? Wayne need an early bedtime or something? And even if you're Brad Mehldau, how does solo piano trump Wayne Shorter's freaking band? Just from a show biz point of view, I would argue one is intrinsically more exciting and entertaining than the other...

Brad first, Wayne second. That's the way it should be!

('Course, all kinds of things are backwards in Toronto.)

I think Mehldau is opening for Wayne's quartet. I could be wrong though.

Looks like Wayne's on first...*shrug* Maybe it's the other way around? Either way, I REALLY want to meet Patitucci, so I'd be really bummed if they went first and then had to split for another gig or something.

EDIT: Nope! Other way around -- Brad's opening! http://www.bradmehldau.com/tour/index.html

EDIT: Also, oddly enough, Wayne's profile at Verve's site doesn't even LIST this stop on the tour:
http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artis...=rslt&aid=2919

What's that all about? Massey Hall not important/historic enough?

I saw Shorter's group with Perez, Patitucci, and Blade a few years back at USC's exquisite Bovard Auditorium. That was a crack band. Farin, you're in for a treat.

I would love to hear Shorter and Mehldau play at least one number together, although I worry that if they did a duet it would turn out to be silly frippery akin to Shorter's disc with Herbie Hancock, 1+1.

Wow, guys. That concert was easily one of the highs of my life -- this was beyond inspiring. I've heard and seen what I consider to be pretty high levels of playing, including some of the best musicians in Canada, but I have never even conceived of a group playing on this level. It was just amazing -- Patitucci and Blade were easily the tightest rhythm section I've ever heard.

In all honesty, I spent most of the night listening to those two. I mean, yeah, Shorter, and yeah, Perez, but god damn -- these guys were at the TOP of their game. I was talking with my brother on our way to the stage door, and the best way I could describe Blade's drumming was a "series of controlled explosions." Wow -- and these guys were having a GREAT time playing, especially for the last couple tunes. Patitucci looked like he was having the time of his life.

After the show, my brother and I went around and waited (with many other people!) to meet the band. Shorter came out first, and was immediately set upon by a crowd of record, ticket, etc. carrying fans who wanted signatures. I got him to sign the control plate of my slab in silver sharpie (the plate being black,) in addition to Patitucci and Blade (I missed Perez.) Also, one more thing I'll say for Patitucci -- this is a stand-up guy. There's more than enough dead-beat dads, especially musician dads -- but even as he was walking out the door, he already on the cell phone talking to his family. Class act, man.

What a frickin' band...just amazing. Also, Mehldau's solo set was beautiful. Anyone else who was there -- what was in that medley? I think I heard hints of Autumn Leaves and Body and Soul, but I'm not sure. Also, I would've loved to have gotten his signature, but I had no idea where he went after his set!
