Also known as the contrabass, the double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched member of the violin family. The double bass has a compass of about 2 1/4 octaves, and to avoid the constant use of leger lines, the notes are written an octave higher than the real sounds. The great length and thickness of the strings means that the fingers are more prone to insurmountable physical difficulties. In order to eliminate this problem, the strings are tuned in fourths instead of fifths - G D A and E - to avoid long finger stretches.

You may know it as contrabass, string Bass or bass viol if you are familiar with classical music.

Some of the less flattering name include bass fiddle, doghouse and upright bass.

Double bass may be the most common name.

Scroll down this page. Go to the basses section under DB and look at the Talkbasses thread. There are tons of great photos there.

Bull fiddle!
That's the one I like best these days.

I've been learning to say Doghouse in other languages:
maison d' chien
la casa de perro
Hundhaus
casa di cane
traquer la maison

etc etc.

tee hee

In Thai it would be:

Bahn mah

but the improtant thing is to get the tones right, which us DBers shouldn't have so much trouble with considering how hard we try to play in tune...

bahn (house) is a falling tone so think of sliding from E to Eb on the G sting
mah(dog) is a rising tone so think of sliding from D back to E

Thai folks got great ears by the way.

You may avoid an awkward confrontation if you are able to remember this distinction between la casa de gato.

Add "koirankoppi" to your list and you know at least one Finnish word.
