What would be your Dream Jazz Quintet?

Maybe this has already been done. In fact, I know it has. However, I am very curious to hear the opinions of my fellow TB'ers. What would be the ultimate jazz quintet for you to listen to? I say quintet, because it is kind of classic, and I would also like to say that you shouldnt add yourself

Mine (today) would be....

Miles
Oliver Nelson
Bill Evans
Art Davis
Elvin Jones

...playing Wayne Shorter tunes

Playing Ellington, Mingus, Trane, and Monk, with that kind of amazing aggressive energy heard on "Money Jungle"...

Eric Dolphy
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Charles Mingus
Max Roach

Can't even begin to compare any group in this format to --

George Coleman
Freddie Hubbard
Herbie Hancock
Ron Carter
Tony Williams

In a more modern train of thought, playing more free/avante-garde with tunes contributed by all members of the band...

Donny McCaslin
Kevin Turcotte
Justin Haynes
John Patittucci
Jean Martin

Dream Quintet

I can't believe that no one has put Clifford Brown in their dream quintet yet.

Actually, I think there are some quintets that come pretty close to ideal as it was. Some of the Blakey groups and the Dorham/Henderson groups, for example.

But, in the interest of assembly:

Brownie
Joe Henderson
Wynton Kelly
oh man...on bass...I can't have just one bassist, but let's go with Sam Jones in this particular group - Oh Mingus! Wow, Brownie and Mingus together. I'll have to ponder that. They probably wouldn't have liked each other very much.
NOT Max Roach, I'll have to think about a drummer. Maybe Roy Haynes.

But for Christsakes, let's get Clifford out front with the trumpet already.

There are feature bassists and ensemble bassists and I'm inclined to put a great ensemble bassist in this group. Butch Warren would be a good choice in his prime if you weren't looking for acrobatic soloing or LaFaro like comping. Sam Jones is really solid and has that great gut tone. Ray Brown, of course. Then there's the moderns like Chuck Isreals, Dave Holland, Scott LaFaro. Could you even imagine putting Christian McBride with Clifford Brown and Joe Henderson? You'd have to take his freaking Wah pedal away from him, of course, but I think Christian would recognize the sactity of that particular gig.

Me on bass.
Jimmy Rowles on piano, three times.
Ray Brown, to come and kick my a$$, and show me how it was supposed to be done.

Chris Potter
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Brad Mehldau
Charnett Moffett
Jeff Ballard

I often wish for the piano-piano-piano-bass-asskicker instrumentation, too. Perhaps a large gong that summons ninjas would round it out. Oh wait, that's the dream I had last night, not my dream quintet.

After hearing them in Javon Jackson's "Superband", I would need Jimmy Cobb and Jim Anderson (bassist from Cincinnati). Tightest groove I have ever heard. I basically ignored Javon and Benny Green all night, and have been hearing their sound as my ideal drum-bass mix ever since.

Obviously the rest of the band matters much less, but if I could get Brad Mehldau, the crazy-sounding Wayne Shorter of 2006, and maybe the Wynton of Standard Time Vol. 1 to play nice, I'd throw them in there. If Wynton turns out to be too much trouble, maybe just ditch the trumpet and throw the ninja-summoning gong player in as the fifth player. Or maybe Steve Vai.

Jeff

Ooo, I like the idea of mixing Mehldau and Wayne Shorter 06. Okay, I have a new configuration...

Wayne Shorter
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Brad Mehldau
Scott Colley
Jim Doxas

Elvin Jones

.....Thats already been done but...

Clifford Brown
Cannonball
Oscar Peterson
Mingus
Dannie Richmond

I think the second group would have a really interesting dynamic between straight ahead bop and more out (with Mingus and Dannie)

Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard have played together many times - 'Red Clay' has a quintet with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Lenny White!

They also played together on a Chick Corea album!

I was thinking "AWESOME" in terms of Tristano and Williams as far as the crazy rhythmic groupings would go.
