Why call it a dog house?

Everyone asks me and I don't have a good answer for them. Anyone have some history on this?

It goes back to bop days, when Bird noticed that Oscar Pettiford's bass had an awful smell about it (mildew or something). That combined with the fact that a bass is in some sense a big wooden box led him to crack the joke, which is now standard slang.

Not really, that was all crap. No idea.

From a site on Bill Black. "The reason being that the acoustic instrument was big enough to house the family hound dog!"
