I think there must be much more "subjugation of the ego" amongst orchestral players than I could ever attain or aspire to!!
I have felt what Ed mentioned, as part of large choirs - but to me it's much easier to sing, than spend 20 years or whatever, learning a demanding craft, just to be drowned out by the brass and percussion!!
