The kid is great. But there's something to be learned here.
Naturally, some people have more inate talent than others. but all the stuff he's doing (which is what a lot of guys aspire to) is a matter of practice. Practice enough, and you'll get there. (Or close). And it isn't practice in years -- it's concentrated practice.

But I think a lot of people get to a point in their life where it isn't a contest between who's practiced the most, but who says something unique, interesting, creative and communicative.

I've been around long enough to have heard hundreds of junior Marcus's and teen Yngwie's and baby Buddy Rich's. But once you're 20 years old or so the novelty wears off, and you have to make your original mark or learn how to play every conceivable style in order to keep gigging.

+1. Was going to post something to the effect myself. I've seen videos of that kid before and he's got monster chops but he can only play things that Jaco, Vix, or MM have played before. I personally hope i never sound like anyone but myself.

True, but remember he is only 13. We all sounded like our influences at that age.
Hopefully he will develope a style of his own. I also agree he put in some serious time learning his instrument.

He needs to be on TB. We'll steer him in the right direction!!

I bet his back hurts. That bass is bigger than he is. Great chops though.

Did we? While parts of my playing and sound have always echoed influences of mine, I never felt my playing closely resembled any one musician. Though I have also had an unusually wide variety of influences so I might very well be anomalous in that way.

Agreed— that being said, let's not take anything away from a young, motivated kid who is applying his aptitude in a very concentrated way.

With his skills, he probably will have no trouble doing studio work, if nothing else. I think his future will be just fine.

There's still going to be studio work in the future?!! That kid is great - but what do you expect when Arthur Maia is your teacher?

Well I think this should end all the posts on "are my hands to small" Cause i'm pretty sure that kid had tiny hands.

Also, yeah this was most likely years of practice, not like 20 obviously, but im sure he was playing at least 3. Young kids just learn faster, we learn all our life skills in the first years of our life, its natural to learn quicker.

I really loved how into it he was, that to me is why this is so good.

I showed this to my jazz buddies and no doubt they said he has a GREAT jazz feel...probably the most important thing in jazz playing next to technique and education. something that cannot be taught.

this kid will have amazing opportunities in life with these skills. I hope he doesn't burn out on it like a lot of us did when we were good at something at 13 - whether it's sports, video games, or music.
