Angry Is 2011 The Year Of The Bar Fight?

Sign in to disble this ad
So far this year every stinking gig has been the scene of mayhem. This past weekend was probably a new record for us. I lost track at 3 fights, but there was stuff happening outside that I didn't see or hear (Thankfully).

Saturday night after closing, there was a group of about 8 or 10 guys pushing, shoving, punching their way towards the back door of the bar (The sound guy sets up maybe 8 feet to the side of the door.) They started heading his way, and he single-handedly managed to repel the entire mob and get them headed back towards the door. (I was outside when they exploded into the parking lot, and it was a little tense.)

Anyway, I just wanted to give the sound guy props for avoiding disaster at all costs!

Anyone else noticed an uptick in bar fights lately, or is it just me?

Let me do the math. These were bad back in the late 80's early 90's and happened alot, I wasn't old enough to bar hop but hear stories from my friends and sister who was.

Now these people are old enough to have adult children to be in bars and drink.

So yup. The mad drunks from the late 80's and early 90's have reproduced and spoiled their seed.

I was talking to a bar owner this weekend and he said he's been much busier since the start of the year. The night I was there they were getting ready to turn people away. Maybe everybody has had enough of the economy and is going for it anyways?

I think part of it is the long cold winter so far and all there is to do is stay indoors. The animals get out warm up on some punch and well....start punching. I'm lucky my band plays quiet ,respectable venues. We might not have huge crowds but they are behaved. I'm too old for that stuff and use a 70's P bass for protection.

I think this may be a credible theory! I'm going to apply for a government grant to study the phenomenon!

Almost...Drunk dude sitting on stage. I told him were about to get started and proceeds to *try* to grab the tip bucket.
We ol' school grabbed his jacket and quickly pointed him in the direction of the nearest exit..
Needless to say, that was our best nights for tips so far. I think the crowd wanted his a$$ out anyway.

Hey Phalex, I'm from Grand Rapids as well, what bars were you playing, if you don't mind me asking?

I havent seen any fights at any of my gigs... wait, we havent played since Dec. 30th...

Anyways, my fiancee's band played last Saturday night, at a memorial for their flautists girlfriend who died in a car accident a week before. The party was going well, $2000 + had been raised. We were tired and left around 11pm or so. The next morning I got a call from the flautist saying that 10 minutes after he left, two dudes got into it, one of them pulled a gun and fired. The bullet grazed the other guys neck and hit some girl in the thigh. Luckily no one died, but seriously, who rolls strapped to a freaking memorial/benefit show?

This past weekend was The Log Cabin on Division. (Great part of town to begin with) River City Saloon on the West side was kind crazy last weekend too.

We're playing the Victory Club in Ada (Right across the river from Amway) this weekend. C'mon out, I'll buy ya a beer or three.....

This is the crap that I'm genuinely concerned about. It's just got to be a matter of time.

Maybe it's the quality of the people and places you're playing.

Pretty much the same places, but yeah, the people are the ones causing problems.

Bars. Rock & Roll bars. (We play a variety of Rock from old rusty stuff to brand new shiny stuff.)

I presume that's because you aren't playing gigs at the Westboro Baptist Church.
