43yo...Played my first show last night

and it rocked...

We played about 15 covers, 90s stuff at a party in front of 50 people or so. Wasn't perfect but didn't suck either. The only thing that was a drag was that is was DARK on stage...none of us could see what we were doing but we muddled through. Oh and I got a nice ding on my cab while hauling it on stage with a buddy lol

So it feels like a great milestone...picked up a bass on a whim a few years ago, played as a hobbyist for a while, then got into a craigslist band and finally hauled my old ass up on stage last night and played some loud rock and roll. Awesome.

:hyper:

Congratz!

Way to go. You're hooked now.

Congratulations.

Congrats!

One of my closest friends is a fifty-four year old drummer. He played his first gig this summer. He still has a big grin on his face.

You are never too old to have a happy childhood.

Good for you!

I'm 43 now, and kick myself for not playing in a band when I was in my teens and 20's. I was just too shy and figured i wasn't good enough. Played my first gig when I was 30.

Man, that is so cool. I can still recall the nervousness and uncertainty from my first gig decades ago, and the great rush feeling at the end. It's always great, but will never be like the first time (like with so many things).

Here's to many more.

Good job! But 43 is not old.

(Unless you have a bunch of kids, a nagging wife and boss, a ton of debt, etc. That stuff ages you.)

Bassmanbob 11-11-2012 06:33 PM

Great job! Have a lot of fun. That's what it's all about.

Peepaleep 11-11-2012 06:40 PM

Awesome! Best wishes for many more!

bassteban 11-11-2012 06:53 PM

Awesome. I wish I could remember my first...

Best feeling ever. I'm addicted to it. It makes all the band bs worth it IMO. Good for you brother.

BTW, I'm 37, you aint that old.

Waterpilot 11-11-2012 08:11 PM

Nice! And Congrats!

pflash4001 11-11-2012 10:57 PM

Cool, man! I'm glad you had a great night! Unlike what most people think, getting a record deal and touring the world isn't what it's all about. Those are a very small number of all the folks out there making music happen. There are much more regular guys like you out there doing it. I'm 39 and can still remember my first gig 25 years ago. Today I'm a high school English teacher, a husband to a beautiful wife who NEVER gives me grief about my musical activities or late nights, and a dad to 3 amazing kids who have inherited the love of music from my wife and me and the previous 4 generations of musicians in our family. It's great that I shared this with my grandparents, my dad and uncles, and now I can share it with my kids. Stay with it! It's the best addiction to have!

Congrats kmon. No longer a performing virgin!

+1. Who knew I could have been having so much fun all this while? (now 41, started playing 3 years ago, started gigging last spring).

To the OP, congrats! Here's to many more to come!

Great job, and thanks for the inspiring story. I picked up a bass for the first time a few months ago at age 42, and hope that I'll be playing my first gig when I'm you're age!

Congrats for sure!
