2- Research. " What cool things does it do?"
3- Study. " Man if I had this thing, think of all the cool things I could do!"
4- Obsession. "Must look at every picture I can find! Must start/find threads that justify my usage of this thing! Must start finding things I can sell!"

Thats how it works for me. I try to keep things at Stage 3. But a couple of things have recently crossed into Stage 4. Better start the scrimping

I suppose you're right. "Hmmm this thing doesn't do that cool thing for me."

Although I've had plenty of gear that gets used once, kept for months and then sold off...

| | | | Stage 1: Check account (if yes, move on to Step 2. If no, stop here)
Stage 2: Buy beer
Stage 3: Drink beer
Stage 4: Do stage 1 again. Slighty in the bag, think you have more than what you do. Buy gear. Wake up with headache and NSF fee.

3.5 - Compare. "Well, this isn't really as cool as device X, and device Y doesn't have shortcomings A, B, and C, and device Z is just cheaper."
Go to Step 1 for devices X, Y, and Z. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Summerville, SC | | | So, to summarize, there are apparently at least 8.5 stages of GAS:
1- Discovery. "Hmmm cool thing there, what does it do?"
2- Research. " What cool things does it do?"
3- Study. " Man if I had this thing, think of all the cool things I could do!"
3.5 - Compare. "Well, this isn't really as cool as device X, and device Y doesn't have shortcomings A, B, and C, and device Z is just cheaper."
4- Obsession. "Must look at every picture I can find! Must start/find threads that justify my usage of this thing! Must start finding things I can sell!"
5- Acceptance. "I'm buying it today."
6- Evangelization. Post overwhelmingly positive reviews of the thing you bought within the first few days of buying it, before you've found out about all its faults.
7- Rejection. The item ends up in either the closet, basement, garage, craigslist, or returned to the store where you purchased it.
8- Repetition. Find the next thing to GAS over..... |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Aug 2010 Location: Melbourne | | | BL thinks we need a stage somewhere in there for guilt - why did I buy (insert over-priced item) and now I can't afford (insert necessary thing -rent, food, etc)
GF thinks he is confusing ''boy-shopping'' with ''girl-shopping''.

One of the most important stages of GAS is trying to convince your wife that you absolutely need that piece of gear, but also been able to come with a plausible excuse when stage 7 hits and you need to sell the item.
