Hey guys, I've been combin' the forum and I couldn't find a thread like this. I'm going to tell you a few stories where it started out as a train-wreck but turned into some of the best moments in my show history.
There we were, a new venue just opened up and we were requested to play the first show at a place called The Backstage. The band's name was "Black & Wite" It's supposed to have some deep Si-Funkle meaning to it, but whatever. We were blues-alterna-folk half the time, and then it turned into comedic hard rock. We were in highschool, we had our crowd. Anyways-
We got shafted by this venue from the get go. We were told that house roadies will take care of the equipment to pamper the bands coming in and out. We agreed to it, and while they set up we got food and came back. They detuned our instruments, nearly dropped one of the toms straight off of the stage and later I found out the ground on my amp's power cord was broken off. We were promised 40 minutes or 8 songs to our set list.
We finally get up to play and we're introduced. A healthy amount of people were there and we were having a good enough time as we could. In our 5th song, 20 or so minutes into it, the raodie who messed my cable runs up on stage blatantly and says that this will be our last song. I grab the front man on the shoulder and he turns around suddenly. I told him what was up, and I said, "We should play... the song." He motions everyone to stop and announces that this will be our last song. We start it up and a hard rock power masterpiece that is averaged to last 25 minutes and is an epic experience. We got a massive positive response when we finished. We would have gotten an encore, but we were done with that venue.
Another band, same place, several months later. Under new management and I thought it would be good to check out this time around. We set up and are called to stage. In the first song, both drummer's sticks break on the first beat. He had many new sticks, it was just a hilarious starter. 2 minutes into the song, the guitarist's guitar strap full-out snapped and it dropped onto his custom made pedal board. We're laughing our faces off and we call out of a strap from someone. Someone happened to have had a belt that worked perfectly as the strap. Many smiles and rocking followed. The next song was especially taxing musically and the 5th string on my beautiful black SG bass broke, which blew my mind, because it's the least used out of all the strings.
It only half broke and is hanging just low enough to start a massive buzz on the the E and A. I'm frantically trying to hold it up with my thumb, I tried folding it over the horn of the body, I tried everything and I had a solo coming right up. I had the perfect intro that could never be planned. The cue was coming up and I knew what I must do. I wrapped the bastard up in my hand and I ripped it off of the bass, out of the bridge, out of the tuners and the crowd flipped out. I tossed the string into the crowd and then perfectly fell into my allotted solo. That was a fantastic night.
Anyone have those bi-polar moodswing situations where everything is more than screwed over, but it turns out wonderful anyways?
