Age gap amusement - again

I played a gig tonight with my young pals. Great fun and great musicians, but they're 19 to 22 and I'm 48. Doesn't bother me or them in the slightest, but the audience's perception can be really funny at times.

One girl at the gig tonight asked me in our break "Does your drummer have a girlfriend? He's really cute."

I replied "Yes, I'm pretty sure he does have a girlfriend." Then she says "Are you his Dad?"

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Well, you are old enough to be his dad, so what do you expect?

Right on, my man. True enough, for sure.

Now, now. Most of us are old enough to stare at a kid and say, "Betamax. C'mon. You can't tell me you've never heard of that!"

Pretty awesome neither side has a problem with the age difference. I be a lot of people would feel weird about it. Music is universal regardless of age, race, etc

I had to Google that. Then again, my parents are 40, and VHS was born ten years before I was, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

You should've then said: "No, I'm not his dad, but I'm available."

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

She was not really hot. If she was, I'd have done our drummer a big favour, girlfriend or no.

Same thing happened to me not long ago, when I was still 48 (just turned 49) - was doing a jazz trio gig with a drummer who's about 24, and a woman asked if he was my son. I just pretended like I was hard of hearing, and didn't answer her.

He's actually the son of a piano-playing friend from high school; weird to be in a band with the son, cause every once in a while I look at him and get flashes of his dad.

(In real life, I do have a drums-playing son, but he's a teen).

My son the guitard

Huh. My son, 17 y/o, is a budding self-proclaimed guitar god. Yeah, we'll see.

That said, I'd love to be in a band w/him. He's coming along pretty well, but the band he's in now is screamo, and I just can't go there. The stuff he's writing on his own is more folk-y. Go figure.

He's a cool dude, and handsome, too. A real chick magnet. Maybe someday....

Send a message via AIM to sonic assassin
eh, my 50something year old neighbor taught me bass, and i had no issue telling my friends i was going to hang out with him instead of people my age. his 2 year older than me son would answer the door and immediately call for his dad. we went to high school together.

so long as you're not bailing mid set list to go drink tea and watch matlock, i wouldnt sweat it.

keep at it gramps.

That's funny. I can envision you going to the door and knocking. The kid your age comes to the door. Upon seeing you, he turns around and yells, "DAD! Sonic Assassin wants to know if you can come out and play..."
