Almost cancelled talentshow gig!

Sign in to disble this ad
Had a "gig" at a local talentshow today. The soundcheck was at 11 am. My drummer (he's got a car) was to pick me up at 10 -ish, when didn't show, I called him for almost half an hour. He finally picked up the phone, but now he was just mumbling nonesence. Seriously, the guy sounded like he was waking up from anesthesia or something. I called the rest of the band, and explained the situtation.

Moments before we called to cancel, the doorbell rang. "You ready?" He seemed ok, but a bit tired. We got there right on time. Apparently, he's been taking sleeping pills to sleep for a couple of days now. But yesterday he'd taken one beer, and then later realised that it was uhm.. bad to mix pills and alchohol.

This guy..! He's just waay to rock n roll

He was fine, and the concert was great. We (and 3 other bands) won, and we're going to compete against a couple other bands from our side of the country.

Another funny thing, apart from the drumkit and P.A, we delivered ALL the equipment. My ampeg stack, a Marshall stack, and an Orange stack. And none of t!he bands knew what "standby" meant, so there was a loud 'pop' each time a band walked of stage!

Seems like you should charge someone for providing the backline.

^This.

Hearing a pop is on the mildest end of the spectrum, I have hair raising horror stories about "borrowed" gear, and I'm sure the few threads about the subject prove that I'm not alone.

The general rule on borrowing gear is: DON'T

Congrats on the win though.

What did You get? Other than a chance to play again that is.

Regards

Yep. We get to play again, but that's really all I want anyway! :P
I really wouldn't mind lending my gear, but it seems I can't trust anyone with it. If we hadn't brought our gear, we'd all have to play through some crappy 100$ Laney combos, and well.. Once you go Ampeg - you never go back.
I think I'll just put up a note that says "Use Standby - or Die", or something like that.

Hi.

Bringing Your own stuff to a multi band gig doesn't mean everyone and their sister and a distant cousin can use it.

If You guys want to continue the charity, by all means, but do understand that if something gets broken, YOU'LL be the ones to pay for it. Not to mention Your gig is less that piece of gear if you haven't played yet.

I'm way too easily coaxed to lend my stuff only to find out that people in general don't care a zit about other persons posessions.
It was like that in the 80's when I started out as a teen, and on these few decades I haven't seen much improvement on that front.

My looks nowadays however make people think twice about asking to borrow stuff, any stuff, and to think twice about abusing it .

Regards
Sam

My band always plays multi band shows. I usually share my rig. I've only had one bad experience. A bassist couldn't seem to grasp the concept of turning the volume down prior to unplugging. Nothing damaged, but it was certainly annoying.

I'd go one step further in situations like this by only lending my cabinet, if anything. Borrowers must supply their own power, and if their amp does not match my cab for impedance, then that's just too bad. Nobody said that you had to loan your gear. Protect your investment.
