ok i know there's gonna be some flak directed at me for this but after our last gig it made me realise how much of a novelty it is having young desperate women throw themselves at me at gigs
sure a while back i was jumping on anything with a skirt but now.... i dunno they dont have the same magic for several reasons
A) my girlfriend is usually standing 8ft away (usually stage left)
B) there always either really drunk or really annoying
C) they always tell you that you rocked even when you know you sucked (last time i play hungover)
D) most of them are waaaaay too young which really makes me uncomfy
E) most of them dont know what a bass guitar is or that i'm a bassist NOT another guitarist
F) no matter how gorgeous, sexy sensual, classy or fit they are the drummer and the singer will always maintain that either
1: they were desperate
2: they were mingers
3: they've had sexier, cuter etc
4: it was a guy in drag
5: they were just using me get closer to them etc
G) ive grown up a bit...... kinda
and finnaly) after a long drive to the venue plus a long load in followed by a soundcheck thats halfarsed by the engineer resulting in a long argument with said engineer followed by a long set full of running round and other stage shinannigans which is then followed by a long strip down and a long load out covered in now cold sweat to look forward to a long drive home THE LAST THING ON MY MIND IS HANKEY PANKEY WITH THE LADIES!!
anyone else get sick of it?
or am i just the poor sucker who gets the stupid ones who dont know who they are or what there doing and the drunk ones with sick down one side of there shirt or my fave the nutter that laughs at everything

Okay, maybe "hate" is a strong word here. I'll admit, they don't hold the same sway with me that they used to. Call me crazy, but I'd rather go home to my wife. But I can't say I mind the attention, even if I know I'm not going to go home with any of them.
Just appreciate them for what they are; a pleasant momentary distraction. And if it helps you to think of them as guys in drag... hey, whatever. It's a big world. there's room for everybody, right? |

Bring friends to deflect them toward.

| | | | LOL! I can kind of relate to this thread... I was once working roadcrew for a friend of mine who's in a fairly successful Hip Hop group and a chick who knew I couldn't stand her was at the club. We ignored each other at first but then when she saw me talking and interacting with some of the Rappers all of the sudden it was like 'Hey Buddy! How are you!? Can I get back stage...?' Really kind of sickening how people respond to precieved fame and power... |

And yeah, the girlfriend standing 8 feet away at your gig might have a negative effect on scoring new chicks.
But then again, she is your girlfriend. So.........................good luck.
Those groupies aren't going to be throwing themselves at you on any other day. Even after you meet them. Unless they are nymphos! Wear a raincoat! |

If they get too persistent, try, this:
You: "Wait right her. I'll be right back."
Her: "Mmmmm, okay!"
You: ........
(Nothing, because you never come back.)
You can always introduce them to your drummer. Chances are, he'll need a place to stay anyway.

Groupies are great! You don't have to shag 'em all, especially with the g/f right there. Just go with the flow and she will learn to do the same. If you act with honor and integrity, then your relationship will solidify. Remember, she loves you for YOU, not because you made her shake her thang while lubricated with alcohol (or worse). After a while, she will actually learn to laugh about the whole thing.
I know of plenty of my fellow musicians who hve their significant others at gigs. The musician will play the gig, and get the attention of groupies, and the significant other can pay passing attention, and perhaps enjoy some attention of their own away from the stage. The band may drink for free, and the g/f just lets other poor saps buy her drinks, and at the end of the night, PSYCHE -she goes home with the one who brought her. All that matters is who you go home with at the end of the gig. As long as it is the one whom you showed up with, there should not be a problem whatsoever. Enjoy the fact that you have some wow-power beyond the one in your heart, just don't over-exploit it. Just learn the game, play it deftly, and if your relationship goes the distance, you have stories to tell the kids when you're old.
Remember, you're a bass player, and some times, a little bit of harmless "playa"-style fun can be healthy. Don't overdo it. Set boundaries. TALK to your lady. She should appreciate the openness, and where you set the boundaries. Stay within those boundaries, and enjoy your moments.

That should be it. |
