Yeah, the last time my band recorded the bass player no-showed, so I did his part. Best playing I've ever done, and I got a record of it.

Sometimes it's happens regardless of the stituation.

Two fridays ago at Schubas, we were playing a little 40 minute acoustic set opening for another band. Not the ideal setup, as we were without our main backup singer, we usually play full electric, and we had a sub drummer.

It went great! The goal was to pull back the volume and lay back a bit without loosing all the rock and it totally worked. Almost every note was on, the sub got all the transitions, and the groove was right where it was supposed to be.

Oh, and the audience enjoyed themeselves also.

This makes more sense than you can imagine.

For the past 6 months there have been times where I was fumbling around the fretboard actually trying to play notes, and then there were times that playing around the fretboard was effortless. And the only thing I can really remember about when it was easy and happening almost natural was because I wasn't thinking about moving my fingers from fret to fret, I was just letting my hands talk. They have alot to say when I get with my drummer.

I'm big into the reverse psychology and the real power of the mind. If you don't interfere with your mind at work (ie trying to play notes) you will find it easier to play.

This one time I was playing with a substitute music teacher. He was very friendly, and we just jammed the entire time.

I quit going to that music school the next week after realizing that I really did not like my real teacher.

I think I've experienced this a few times, but there's one example in particular I remember. I was jamming along to a song, not really paying attention to my bass, but just listening to the music. At one point I heard this really awesome bass fill, and stopped playing and rewinded the song to hear it again, untill I realised that it wasn't in the recording, but that I had played it myself.
