I am auditioning for a group called "Jim Got Promoted"!! This could be the first rock group i'm a part of.... Any tips for a sort of rock newbie? I play a lot of jazz (tower of power stuff just made its way into our setlist) and church worship band (chris tomlin inspired stuff).

They play originals and rock/ punk covers....

Wow, you did a complete 360 Rock and Punk! Okay for the Punk stuff keep it simple play with a pick the rock stuff you can be more creative but, make sure you keep it a driving beat with little fills between chords! Jazz is a way different animal I played jazz in school but, always listened to metal at home. good luck.

I say play what ya feel. Lots of bands look for a bassist that isn't stuck in standard.

Thanks!

I don't listen to jazz outside of the stuff we play (funk lately). Jazz is fun to play, rarely fun to listen to, so I too listen to much more rock and metal.

Just do what you do best and the rest will take care of it's self. You wouldn't be auditioning if you didn't think you could cut it so give it your all and above all else enjoy because that's the real reason we do what we do.

Try and not overplay. There will be spots in songs that some of that can be used to strut your chops, but not every part of every song.

I've been playing since 1964, having audtioned for several bands, and conducted many more auditions for bands during this time. First thing - be on time - actually early is better. Give yourself plenty of time to set-up your gear and bass and be ready to go prior to the designated time. Volume wise, it's always better to start out on the low side and then work your way up to the proper blend point. Even better if they suggest that you turn up. Be prepared - in addition to your basic gear - bring a music stand complete with notebook and pen or pencil for making notes, a guitar stand to properly rest your bass when not playing. A hand towell to wipe down your strings from time to time and Tylenol and Pepto for unexpected needs and bottled water or soda.

I think this covers the basics and I hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy your time.

Awesome. Yeah, don't over play... I had an audition once. They asked me could I solo, I said yeah...I played the intro to "Runnin With The Devil" for them. They all looked in shock.. .and I busted out laughing and slapped the lead singer on the back really hard and told him, "Im hired". They hired me...

If you're on time, you're too late. Be early.

Audition went fantastic!!! I'm officially part of the band!

Rock music is a lot easier of a transition from jazz than I though it would be:P haha.
