And the band played on...

So I'm at my regular Tuesday Reading Band gig last night. Great band, 17 piece, good musicians, great hang, free beer.
Anyways...
About a half hour into the first set Jim, the second trombonist, gets up and leaves the bandstand. He comes back at the end of the tune and tells the first trombonist that he's not feeling well and is going to the balcony to lie down. The first follows after then comes back downstairs asking for a cell phone to call 911. Poor Jim (whose not that much older than ME) is on the floor with chest pains and shortness of breath. Luckily there's a couple of nurses in the club and they attend to Jim until the paramedics arrive. They haul him off, say he's doing fine, and we finish the gig.
Looks like Jim's gonna be fine, but scary stuff.

About three weeks ago a singer in one of the local bar bands (who I'd done the odd pickup gig with, but didn't know that well) played a regular gig the saturday night, went home and had a heart attack in his sleep. He didn't make it...

He was only 43... Scarey indeed.

Wow, that's pretty scary and serious. I know a young guy, in his 20's, who's had a near-fatal heart attack. The cause? Mixing alcohol and pot. But I'm sure that won't happen to any of the invincible people who read this...

Well Jim's wife emailed us and it looks like he's gonna be just fine. Turns out it was a severe kidney infection. He's still in the hospital but on the road to recovery. Whew!!!!!!

Sometimes my anxiety increases and my blood pressure drops to scary levels so much that I occasionally pass out cold and experience strange dreams (of the oxygen deprived sort) when I *ahem* smoke - standing, sitting, lying down - thankfully never while driving, although almost. I used to think I was just being weak or strung too tight. Now I'm 38 with a wife and two kids and I just don't do it anymore. Pride and ego are out of the picture, it's really just not for everyone.

An employee of mine came to me one afternoon and told me he was going home sick. Called in the next day. Came in after that (it is now Thursday), works for a little while, and then goes home sick again. His wife calls me the next afternoon and tells me he died during emergency triple bypass surgery. He was 38. Family history and over weight a little bit. You just can't screw around with that type of stuff.
