Unhappy Bass is the loneliest number that could ever be

1) I had just stepped of stage after a great set and made my way to the restroom. Our sound guy walks in behind me and we are doing our business when Joe public walks in and says to the soundman..."you guys are great! You are the bass player right?" doh!
2) The band just finished a three hour show. Packed up and decided to caravan to another bar for the after party. I happened to get a ride with a girl and her boyfriend and a friend of mine. I recognized them from the front table right in front of the stage. They were commenting on how great the band sounded to which I said thank you. With the most bewildered look in their eyes they said, "oh you are in the band?" Doh!
Same night both of these happened.

this has never happened to me to be honest, mainly cause I was in a three piece and mainly cause I was lead vocals.

Yes, get used to it, my friend. I can't tell you how many times people, both guys and girls, staff and security will say, "Oh, you're in the band?" I DO perform lead vocals on a few tunes, so that does help, but unless it's the whole evening, our lead singer and drummer get the most "affection". The singers always get it because they're the attention whores, and our drummer buys shots for everyone.

My drummer may be on to something....

Oh I've been doing it long enough to know this. I just found it amusing. If my goal was to get laid and be popular I would have worked out alot more and played guitar.

You're a bassist. By default, you're doing a service to music. That's what your job is. You have chosen to dedicate your life to this noble cause. Everything else is irrelevant.

Hope that helps

I work out and don't have a problem with girls, but being in the shadows still doesn't help. I even call myself a crackmonkey when it comes to my on-stage persona, because I really get into it, but still, bass....

Hahaha.

Luckily, I see that the low end is always making the girlies' asses shake, thanks in part to Shotsboy.

Also, I'm not concerned with getting a piece at gigs. Just like speed without control, females that have looks with no personality...yay.

You need a distinctive and funky hat. Wear something like this and people will ALWAYS know who you are.

The fact that they did not notice you has nothing to do with you being a "bass player"... sorry. LOL

Yeah, he knows that drums are way cooler than bass

Muahaha! I love being a drummer first and a bassist second

+1
But be careful -- one day, when you least expect it, one special girl will notice you, hold on, and not let go. My wife and I have been together over 17 years and look forward to many, many more.

Perform more, dance around more. I've been a bass player in loads of bands playing loads of genres, including pop covers (where the bass lines are dull and don't grab the audiences excitement). However every gig I've ever played I always get recognized after. It's not about being the bass player, as far as most of the audience are concerned you're just a man with a guitar, if you stand at the back in the dark just playing your lines why should you get noticed. Music is a performance art, so perform.

If you get noticed, you're probably doing it wrong.
