| Bass Player Wanted?

Many years ago I went for an audition for a rock band. I had been playing bass for only a few months but they said that was o.k. as long as I had my own transport. I didn't think much of this until I turned up at the singer's house.
He came out with a keyboard and amp and directed me to the hall where they rehearsed. We unloaded our gear and then he asked if I would run him down the road to pick up the guitarist. Of course, I agreed. We went to his place and manhandled a Marshall stack into the back and then returned to the hall. We unloaded his gear, then I was asked if I could pick up the drummer.
Off we go again and collect the drummer and his kit, which was the biggest I've ever seen close up. It took three journeys all together to shift it but eventually we got there.
Two hours after I had arrived the band was set up and ready to go. We started jamming and pretty soon I realised I couldn't keep up with these guys. They were far too good for me. After about twenty minutes I dropped out but they kept on for another hour with the singer playing the bass lines on his keyboard. When they were done I apologised and said I needed to practice more. But they said, 'No problem.' They'd give me all the support I needed to play in their band and I was in. I couldn't believe my luck. After transporting all the gear back to their houses, I eventually got home around 2 a.m. dog tired but happy.
You've probably guessed by now that I never heard from them again. Even to this day I still can't figure out if they were really looking for a bass player or just transport to rehearsal. |
