Ultimately, I only care the opinion of one woman: my wife. And she likes my hat. So, it stays. I am well beyond the years of trying to impress 20-somethings into thinking that I truly am cool or hip.

I'm always wearing a hat, though once played like this and upside was not being able to see the f***ing audience at all.

When T-Bone Wolk auditioned for Hall and Oates, they loved him, but not the look of his bald head. They asked him if he would wear a hat.

I've been bald since around 1972. I wore a cowboy hat while in a country band in the mid 70's. I will wear a hat if playing outdoors and it's cold. I'd rather not wear one. It won't make me look any younger, any better, or fool anyone into thinking I have hair, plus I don't like the way they look or feel. One very hot outdoor gig, I wore a baseball hat, and dunked it in ice water between songs. Some do look good onstage with one, but like the shaved head/goatee look...maybe only one out of 20 look good with one. You will never see me with a baseball hat and shorts on a gig. I've yet to see anyone who looked like a musician with that uniform on.

My stage name is Bryan Hat, so it's kind of a must. My band all wears suits for gigs and I usually wear a black homburg adorned with a handful of buttons. I coordinate my feather with my tie and pocket square.

OK... if not being able to see the audience is an upside, that means there aren't enough chicks at your shows. And wearing a hat turns off 70% of chicks. Put the two together. Maybe if you stopped wearing hats, your audience would be worth looking at!

I think it depends on the hat and if it's one's personal style anyway. I'd like to wear a hat but am having a hard time finding one due to me having a smaller than average size noggin'! 6-3/4-6-7/8 is still too big. I'd probably have to get a custom job.

On topic; you can tell those who wear hats just to try and be cool looking from the ones who wear hats all the time. Those guys are annoying!

See, this sounds like a legit hat-wearer.

Also, to the other guy, if you don't care what the bimbos think, you're leaving a lot of money (and, other, more fun stuff) on the table. Young, attractive women are a band's most valuable target demographic. Where the bimbos go, everyone else follows in droves, and buy lots of drinks.

We play Soundgarden, not Bon Jovi.

Unless you're 20-something and under, hats usually equals bald. I'm almost 50 and thin on top so baseball hats for me when I play.

21 said that hats worn by band members are a turn off - - - reasons - - - really nerdy - - - is their hair that dirty - - - if the hair is dirty then they probably smell - - - looks yukky - - - just not cool

The hats that 'suck' that were most mentioned were fedoras, flat taxi cab style hats and touques (tube hats for you southern boys and girls)

Interesting in that three women said if you have a large bald spot wear a hat

Anyhoo . . . it was a hoot and the answers were surprising . . . nobody told us to get lost when we asked them the questions . . . maybe because the wife and I did it as a couple . . . plus we got to meet a whole lot of people

One of the bass players, a friend, asked us what we doing . . . when we gave him the results he literally ditched his fedora it looked better on his girl friend than it did on him
They have all become a tired cliche', plus the girls know you only have one and wear it everywhere...

The trilby's (short brimmed fedoras) most of all, they always look like someone trying way too hard. I never understood why looking like the punk caddy or the judge in Caddyshack was cool all of a sudden, but they do look cute on girls...

I play in church mainly, so hats are not an issue for me. If I were playing bars or clubs, I would just wear what I liked, I certainly wouldn't ccare if women liked it. The easiest way to look like a hard up loser is to pay too much attention to what women say they like.

I wear a ball cap because I am balding
I used to do that, until my gf said it would look better if I just shaved my head. Now more girls than ever come up to me and say I look like Vin Diesel(minus a few steroids of course).

There's a city wide acceptability of hats in Toronto?

As a girl.. I say no to hats! However, those flat caps can be cute sometimes.. ugh. Basically, if it looks like you're trying to cover up something.. we can tell - and doesn't wearing a hat constantly make it hard for hair to grow?

Sunglasses though.. that's the worst.. indoors it never looks cool.

I have worn a hat, usually a fedora, everyday for 30 years. Sometimes I'll wear a hat while performing, sometimes I don't.

As for what anyone thinks about it, I couldn't care less.

P.S. - Hat wearing does NOT make one bald or impede hair growth. Baldness is genetic, look it up.

Society would be a kinder and more polite place if all men wore hats.

I'm sorry, but I find this statement very hard to believe.
Not just for you, but also for everyone else who posted the same thing.

People do care what others think of them, it's just human nature.
Everyone wants to be accepted!

Accessorizing your appearance with an article of clothing (a Hat) IS a way of drawing attention to yourself.

Really gotta call it like it is......plain and simple, that's how it is.

Oh yeah,
as for the "Keep my head warm" or "keep the sun out of my eyes" guys,
save your breath.
That argument is like Michael Jackson saying he wore the sparkley glove while performing to keep from getting splinters in his hand.

Why?

I do not care what others think of my appearance. I'm happy with the way I look and don't have low self esteem.
