OK, I'm all about us bassists sticking together, but...

1. just because we both play bass does not make us friends.

2. just because you are better at me at playing bass does not mean I would like a free mini-lesson. Please go to hell.

3. if you're one of those kids who gets psyched about going to Guitar Center, please practice your licks before you go.

For the most part though, the sales guys and adults leave me alone. What bugs me the most there is the annoying bright eyed and bushy tailed young'ns who get really excited about a trip to GC.

It just hurts my heart to hear the intro to YYZ butchered like that, though it was funny because the last time it happened I was holding a Geddy Lee Jazz at the time.

I like your idea especially #2. Slap your bass on your own time. I am tired of hearing and seeing players on YouTube playing fast slapping tech. advanced stuff without any soul or funk. Its 3am est, back to sleep ...................

This is exactly why I do not go to Guitar Center on the weekends.

And because of my proximity to Seattle I try to go as early as possible on weekdays while the kids are still in school and the stoners/grungers are still passed out at home so I don't have to endure their instrumental self-abuse routine.

I guess I'm lucky that due to my age most other GC customers don't chat me up. I guess they figure I'm some old square in there buying something for my grandkids.

But, by going there the times I do I actually get waited on.

Agreed on most. But I'm guessing that at one time you and I were both bright eyed and busy tailed to visit a music store. It's the ones that don't know when to quit, turn down or move along that are annoying.

Also, I think bass player solidarity is not the same as people who feel obligated to give impromptu unasked-for lessons to others. Bassist solidarity is more like "Nice playing/tone/bass/etc."

As far as number two goes, I would love a free mini-lesson, as long as you actually know what you're talking about.

You're in a Guitar Center, bro. No McStore is ever going to offer the atmosphere you're looking for. That ain't why they're in business. They make more money off the kids, likely.

Try one of those bass-only stores that doesn't carry Ibanez, Yamaha, Washburn or Cort (but might carry Atelier Z or Bacchus- you'll get no generalized Asianbashing from me) and the only Fenders on the wall are either Custom Shop or used USA models from the pre-boner era. You'll have fewer teens to deal with. They know what their parents will and will not pay for if they break it.

"(Their) own time..."?????

And your computer just goes to Youtube without your permission and shows you vids you'd rather not see? Sounds like a problem for the Best Buy Geek Squad

Funny, I always sought out players who were "better" than I was so I could learn something and maybe improve. How silly of me.

Meh.

IME bass players are the coolest guys in any band to talk to. We rock!

Hell, I'll even buy you a shot at the bar while you overplay my bass onstage with my band and cheese the drummer off! (True story.)
