The 2000 F 150 does have 140K on it, but it's auto. The last classic american car I owned was a 1964 GTO 4 speed. Sold it in 1974 for $350 and bought a brand new Malibu Classic. Lasted 75k before I got tired of the trips to the dealer.

I don't appreciate the brand bashing and that sort of stuff.
That being said, I was raised in Metro Detroit and I drive a Toyota. It's a great car! Automakers in the US are really putting out some fantastic new cars.

A bunch of us picked it up and placed it on a small patio surrounded by a low hedge and waited in the background so we could enjoy seeing the expression on his face. If you drive a small, lightweight, car, it may be inadvisable to upset a group of motivated high school students.
Back on topic: I drove a manual transmission for 35 years, including 20 years as a commuter in Los Angeles. But, bought a car with an automatic when I hit 50, and have only regretted the decision while driving on twisty roads that harken back to the "exciting" drives of my youth; does the phrase, "limits of adhesion" ring a bell.

| | | | Hadn't owned a manual in 27 years. Used to driving sports/sportier cars (300Z, 'Vette, 3000GT, Avenger, etc.). Oddly, none were available with a manual.
The '95 Avenger, which I tried to keep in showroom condition as long as possible, but the clearcoat started peeling and mechanically, it got to be too much to stay on top of finally crapped out in June.
Bought a 5-speed G5. Black on charcoal. Decent enough looking, but between the 4-cylinder and the 5-speed, I'm averaging about 40 MPG. Seriously beats the 16 I was getting with the Avenger, or the 14 in the 'vette! Lots of fun on back roads too...

Last time I was over the otherside of the atlantic, I hired a mustang for the week. The auto-box was god awful. Every time I tried to accelerate, it stopped for a second while it changed gear. Suprised I didnt end up with whiplash by the end of the week.
Give me my manual Beemer everytime

| | | | 2003 Ford Escape with 5-speed manual. "Inherited" it from my wife when some idiot 18 year old made a left turn just 30 feet in front of me when I was going 50 and I t-boned his sorry butt! Wasted my Ford Ranger, but I splattered his Silverado! My 82 year old father was with me and neither one of us was hurt. So the money from my totaled Ranger went to buy a used Chrysler Town & Country van. My wife drives that and that's how I ended up with the Escape.
All jokes and sexual innuendo aside, I taught my wife how to drive a manual way back in 1982 and she was very adept at working the stick.
I miss my Ranger, but it is fun driving a stick shift again.

I come from a family that always has had vintage VW's in one form or another, so I suppose it was fate that 'The Breadloaf Mobile' would fall into my hands. Its an effort to keep up as a daily driver but its a labor of love. 4 speed, nowadays running 60-70 horsepower. When I tell friends I drive a stick it's not quite what they expect, haha. |

| | | | oh god! too many childhood memories of trips from VA to florida for summer vacation with the family, days of sitting in the back of the VW camper van sweating while listening to that little engine scream at 60 mph.

"I didn't know this was a stick", "How do you know when to shift", "Is it hard to drive". My favorite was when I was around 17 and giving a football team mate a ride home. We decided to hit up a drive through. My legs were tired so every time we stopped up pulled up the E-brake. Finally he asks "Why do you keep putting on your emergency brake, why don't you just put it in park?" I responded "This car doesn't have park". He smiled and shook his head as to say this piece of junk. |

Currently piloting an '04 Dodge Ram 2500 HD short-bed club-cab 4x4 with a Cummins diesel and six on the floor. Oh, also my "scooter", a '12 Honda Rebel 250. Cheaper to drive than the Ram. Past rides: a '96 Jeep Cherokee, a '71 VW Bus, several VW Bugs, an '88 VW Fox wagon, and a '66 IHC Scout with an inline 4. "Family" vehicles, i.e. owned and operated by my wife: an '08 Jeep Wrangler, and an '01 Miata. Every one of them a manual. Only car I ever owned that had an automatic trans was a '72 Plymouth Scamp with a 318. But I was young then.

I'm currently driving the first automatic I've ever owned, and I still find myself reaching for the "shifter" at every corner 6 years later. Man I miss my first car (1970 Plymouth Duster) although I don't miss the 3 on the tree part.

On the way back he took me to this old broken down small barn on the property. tells me to look inside. an orange Duster. I sneak inside to get a better look. Everything is MINT. No chips, no cracks in the vinyl and get this....... Drum roll ........ 89 miles! not 89k, 89!. Old lady that owns it wouldn't sell to my friend. Even offered her 30k. wont take it. She said the barn can collapse on it but she wont sell it. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
