Get this- The mindset here is that driving students should learn on automatic so that they "can focus on rules of the road and operating a vehicle". Apparently, to some, it's better to learn to drive in an automatic car because there's less to think about.

I wish I could convince Americans that manual forces you to pay more attention to the car. Sigh..

I agree, and I think that mindset is stupid. If I use cruise control, I notice I'll pay less attention to the traffic, not more. The fact that you have to concentrate with a stick shift is a good thing. Instead of mindlessingly just following the road, you're actually thinking about what you're doing.

In Norway (and I assume pretty much all of Europe) it's not possible to pass your drivers test in a car with automatic transmission.

Every car my wife and I have purchased since 1985 has had a manual transmission. It is a prerequisite for any car we buy...and we almost always buy new cars. No reason other than we both find manual transmission cars much more fun to drive. It certainly limits your selection, because most models only come with an automatic. We always have to do a serious internet search when we decide to buy a car because our local dealers claim they can't move the manual transmission vehicles...so they only stock automatics.

This is the only used car I've purchased since 1985 (all else have been new), but it is definitely my pride and joy...my 1999 Mercedes SLK230...

I was never expecting a club for this :-)

Automatic is for wimps, long live the manual!

(Chorus - Long live the manual!)

Edit - Hmm I erred, should not have preached without a pic...

ooh, count me in! 2013 Beetle TDI, 6 speed.
The astute observers and VW fanboys will notice that it's got the Heritage rims instead of the stock multispoke alloys...

I dig the rims! I saw a new beetle with those near me the other day. Looks exactly like the rims on my 76' Bus, haha.

Well really what I want to know is what is the 0-60 MPH time and what is the 1/4 mile. DH is close enough we could hook up for a drag race. Unless he's got a really hot package in that 'Stang I think I can take him. He'll have to settle for being able to play circles around me as a bassist.

It's supposed to be 430 factory and 410 in torque, or thereabouts.

So I'll have to upgrade to the 2014 version of my car to play with that.

I bought a new F-150 and was shocked to learn they were no longer available with a manual tranny. But that's just for work. My pleasure craft is a supercharged Miata 5 speed.
