It's not a fashion statement...ever heard of gigging?

Yes, absolutely. That is what I mean.

Technically I have to be the one making the statement, since I'm the person on the stage with the bass. I let another person tell me how to make it more effectively.

I AM a girl. Rumor has it I'm reasonably attractive. I beat myself up for weeks over not buying a bass because it was a sunburst finish and I don't like sunburst finishes. I felt like I was being really shallow. My bass teacher finally said, "Nothing a can of Krylon can't fix" and I went, "Hm!" Then suddenly I started seeing all these beautiful custom paint jobs online, got inspired, and am now very excited about what will soon be my lime green bass with a zebra print pick guard and strap.

What I'm saying is, why settle for function over fashion when you can have both?

OP has got it figured out but I've gotta question the fashion sense of any lady who calls a Ric ugly. I bet her socks don't match either. She probably likes Fender Pawn Shops...

So, this is it: before anyone buys a new bass, get Hernameisrio's opinion.

Ha, more confirmation that girls who like sunbursts are rare.

Rics have a good shape but the pickups and pickguard...

Rics are awesome. Classic look and ballsy sound. Lime green and zebra pick guard... I would simply never play that by choice. This thread gets more ridiculous every time I look at it. There are plenty of female bassist out there playing classic basses. P basses, gibsons, plexi's etc.

If a female told me any ric, let alone, my tbird or sg bass looked ugly or old; I would instantly lose all ability to listen to anything they said. Their words would cease to be an understandable human language. I would see them only as infectious human waste.

Apparently the idea of asking advice from a non-musician-female makes a lot of tb members leap to the conclusion this will automatically lead to a Paris Hilton clone commanding you to trade your ric for a pink Danelectro.

Didn't Pklima's suggestion in post #95 already fix this for you?

It was the other way around for me. I went to music shop with a girl and she suggested the Warwick Corvet, I was like yep she's the one. (she disagreed though )

That's funny, my wife once told me that she thinks sunburst guitars and basses sound better than ones painted in other colors

I don't have any sunburst finished guitars of basses, I think they're ugly

You won't see me spreading rumors about my fantastic slapping techniques and not posting a YouTube link to prove it, I would never do such a thing, never...

I quit reading at "Burberry plaid".

If I want advice on gear I go to other musicians.

Ha! Your YouTube link gets my photo! Although right now, I have Justin Bieber bangs (need trim badly), massively chipped nail polish (Apple laptop technician: does not play well with pretty fingernails), and- incidentally- mismatched socks. :P

I also have a nice start to a callous on the side of my ring finger from my new Squier VM Jazz fretless with its HIDEOUS SUNBURST FINISH OMG EW EW EW CAN'T WAIT TO PAINT IT. Ha ha ha!

Hm...don't have to worry about the hair and nail polish, I'm old enough to see through such superficial things, as make-up and accessories, but I hate to disappoint everyone, reality is, I suck a slapping, actually I suck at playing the bass in general, instead of wandering around the forum here, I should better spend more time practicing...

The innuendo is so subtle, most of them missed it. Well played.

I *always* ask my wife what she thinks of a bass before I go full GAS over it. Playability and tone and all that stuff, figure that out after determining if the bass looks good.

And seriously, if we ONLY think the tone and feel and stuff are important, then why are there ENDLESS threads in the Bass Guitar forum "post the coolest looking P bass," or "which finish looks best," and "should I get the burst or natural finish??"

My wife has given me two bases as gifts, and couldn't pick them out of the dozen I own. She has never cared what basses look like - sometimes when I show a bass to her she thinks it looks pretty, sometimes not.

Her opinion about the appearance of a bass isn't a factor; she has financial input, because we talk about stuff that costs hundreds of dollars. If I wasn't married, my girl friend's opinion about cosmetics wouldn't matter. What matters is how the bass plays, how I like it, and whether it's affordable. If my wife thought a bass looked butt-ugly, I'm sure she would say so. If I still thought it filled an important need, I'd say so.

There is a certain mindset about choosing basses based on the opinions of ladies that I think most of us outgrow. Of course, in some relationships it may be quite different...and that's OK.
