Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

I caught them last night at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London, UK.

I'm not a fan of banjo music per se but they were very very watchable. Victor was on classic form in his playing which he made look so easy while performing some of the most astounding lines I've ever watched live. My eyes couldn't keep up with that thumb of his.

They're off to Budapest today and then the rest of Europe, if you get the opportunity to buy tickets, its definitely worth seeing. We gave them three standing ovations before they disappeared for the night - a great start to their 2007 tour.

Anyways, here are some shots just to whet your appetite.

Looked to me like Vic was playing an Ampeg SVT4 rig with the 15" cab on top of a 4x10.

I was there too! Level 1 though. It was such an amazing show, they seemed so connected with the crowd, and they all seemed to love playing again. And that new song they played, Amberjack I think, was really good too.

I wonder what percentage of the audience were bass players? I'd love to know.

If anyone else was at that gig, lets see your photos too. There were enough flashes going off during the performance.

What's that thing that the pirate dude is playing? Doesn't look like a stringed instrument, looks more like some rejected child's toy actually.

The pirate dude would be Future Man. The thing would be his syntheaxe drumitar.

Google that.

Believe it or not, he did a damn fine impersonation of a real kit on that thing. The subtle dynamics he achieved were very impressive and the samples mixed very well with the real kit.

Futureman (or 'Roy' to his momma) invented it based on a synthaxe.

You could always bag a zendrum I guess?

I just love the vibe of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones! So happy, energetic and positive! I have also found the crowd to be a very positive, happy and good-vibin' bunch of folks!

I am going to see them on the 5th of Feb. here in St. Louis at the Pageant. I am really looking forward to it! I always leave those shows so inspired!

I've seen them open for, and jam with, Dave Matthews several times. And as much as I love watching and hearing Victor play, I think their sax player is just the bomb!

So can futch play guitar AND drums on it? Or is it just drums? The second link provided with information made it seem just like a guitar with drum buttons on it, but no strings or anything.
