The rhythm section (I'm including keys here)? Never. Is what it is. I don't mind, I prefer being able to drive myself home, and our BL is NEVER able to do that.

I'm tight with my band, it takes the efforts and contributions of every one of us to make for a good noise and evening's worth of entertainment. Why should I be singled out and get the credit?
Either all of us should, or none of us should.
Now, if patron hands me a drink and walks off, well, not much I can do about that. But it's wrong on several levels.
In my humble opinion, of course. | Honestly, I would do the same kind of thing, but in a joking/friendly kind of way, not in an I'm insulted you didn't include my other bandmates kind of way. And I'd take what was offered and just hope he came back with more for everyone else. But I would definitely act pleased rather than offended. Mostly because I would be pleased rather than offended! And if I wasn't included in the round, I'd probably make a wise-acre comment about Jaco always said it was women, children, and the rhythm section first!

The quarterback position of the lead singer is well documented; no matter how hard anyone else tries, the singers will always be the focus. Even in bands when they say they aren't the focus, especially if they are women, they always become the focus.
Then, of course, whenever anyone thinks "rock star" then think guitar. Go to your local MI shop and do the math on the guitar to bass ratio. Even though the bass to guitar ratio in a band is 1:1 or 2:1, the number of guitars is 10:1. Because there aren't enough of the same Strat in easter egg colors, or Les Pauls that just had a different color top. "You the bass player? Here's your Fender P or J bass, now STFU."
Bass players just don't get any respect.
But it could be worse, you could be the keyboard player |

All the feelings I'm openly expressing to my TB family are usually carefully and professionally hidden away at the gig.
I see the other side of the coin, for you folks who have the perceived diva, virtuoso, or charismatic front person who gets most of the attention. If I was one of Diana Ross' or Barbra Streisand's sidemen, and she received a bouquet of flowers from a fan, I wouldn't expect her to give me one.
But when everyone in the band is contributing equally, well, I think all the guys in my band would not be comfortable with that.

I've been gigging for 34 years. It happens all the time. Not a big deal. There are more important things in life to worry about.

Afterwards people mobbed the bass player and told me how good he was. I found it amusing. |

| So....assuming everyone is single..if a smokin' hot female comes up to you during the set and asks if you'd like to come back to her place after the gig, you tell her that the rest of the band has to come too? |

I'll leave it to you to figure out the obvious reasons why.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: May 2008 Location: Sioux Falls, SD | | | That happens to me occasionally. The first few times it really bugged me but now not so much (which may have to do with the fact I don't drink as much while playing anymore). Same deal with other guys in the band pulling more chicks than I do (but again, since I'm happily married that's pretty much a moot point as well).
I figure a lot of it has to do with the fact that I'm one of those bass players that likes to stand back by the drummer vs. being on the front line. So usually when that happens I give the buyer the benefit of the doubt cause it's possible they didn't even see me.
What bugs me a lot more (and has happened about as often) is going up to the bar on break (where the entire band is supposed to be comped) and then they try and charge me for my drink and I have to remind them I'm in the band. That to me is just a general lack of attentiveness especially considering they have plenty of opportunity to see what I look like while we're setting up.
But as a general rule... in principle... yes, buying a round for only part of the band is really lame.

. | I make it a practice to introduce myself to the bartender(s) as soon as I walk in a club, and I try very hard to remember his/her name. Then, when near the end of the set when I do the shtick "We're going to take a short break, we'll be back...etc." I have learned to add "don't forget to tip your bartender". That combination, although with common courtesy, usually insures good relations with the staff.
(Last night the bartender even came out to take our drink orders while we were setting up- the sub drummer was quite impressed). | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
