Taking liberties with a score on one own's initiative is incredibly rude.
I wonder if this story is true.

First, the conductor should know his musicians - at least the first-chair cats who get the solos on pieces such as this. Second, if Tommy Horn Boy had in fact played this piece with the Vienna Philharmonic...under direction of the composer, no less...he should've shared his insights and experience with Sir Alex in advance. |

BTW - I'm an Ex Orchestral Tuba Player who's sister  played the Horn!!.
