Gigs tonight at Pinhead Susan's in Schenectady, and tomorrow at the Flightline Pub with the cover band.

I announced I was leaving the group as soon as they could find another bassist this past Tuesday, so this will be a bit weird. I'm gonna miss the pocket money, and I'm sure I'll never cross paths with any of these fine folks again, but it's for the best in the end, I think.

On the plus side, I just got a SansAmp BDDI and everyone remarked how much better my bass sounded in rehearsal for this group as well as in my other project. I can't wait to use it at the gig!

Tonight went OK in spite of our drummer's laptop dying yesterday which meant no loops, no soundbank for the MIDI controller and no soundbank for the electronic drums. We were wondering at 6 PM today what he should play, and then played for the first time ever in this band with a real drum kit. Also for the first time ever with keys. And the first time ever with me playing a new bass with no fingerboard inlays at all (well, it has side dots, but they're on the right-handed side and I'm playing it upside down).

But it went well, the bar was pretty full though not totally packed. People seemed to like it though not a lot danced which always worries me. Best crowd response: "No Limit" and "Be My Lover". We should play more Eurodance, apparently. Also a ton of fun: a girl who weighs less than half as much as me doing guest death metal vocals on one verse of a Shakira song. NOBODY expected that except the band, her sister and her friend.

Last night was shaky, imo. The venue hadn't cleared out the "stage" area and was just serving a large party seated there when we arrived to set up. Ended up going on 45 minutes late because of this. Couldn't do a proper soundcheck and the PA was feeding back all night no matter what we did (well...they...I don't involve myself; too many people throwing in suggestions as it is). Everyone seemed off balance because of these issues.

But the band apparently did well enough to secure a New Year's Eve gig for good money. The singer is that good, though...anyone could be playing behind her and no one would notice.

I just felt off all night, personally, and was pretty upset with my playing and singing...even though I was standing in front of the rhythm guitarist's amp, I couldn't hear what he was playing properly, nor could I seem to hear anything from the vocal monitors but an echo.

Flightline tonight. It will have to go better...

33 degrees fahrenheit at outdoor gig in Spartanburg, SC last night. Drummer had frost on his cymbals. Shoulda brought fingerless gloves. Also made an interesting discovery: Boss OC-3 octaver does not like cold weather.

Awesome crowd, though.

Another gig coming up tonight. Basically playing for tips (while not a lot, it's not too bad). Kinda like a community service thing. There will be line dancing, so it should be fun.

Gigging tonight..this will be our third gig at this venue. I'm hoping that the fact it is chilly outside doesn't keep people away (it's outdoors).

I guess we had something to prove to ourselves after the last gig, because we rocked last night, very tight. New venue for us, nice-sized crowd. Lots of people who had never seen the band before were dancing, really loving the band. No significant clams on anyone's part.

The bar had a guy running the PA, which helped immensely.

And on toppa all that, we got to play "Birthday" for my wife, who loved it.

Last night's gig went ok. Unfortunately there wasn't much of a crowd since it was pretty chilly and most of the patrons stayed inside. We did have fun, though.

Good gig last night. Bigger turnout than I had anticipated ( ) and the dancing was pretty much non-stop.

Love the fact that we're getting tighter as a unit, which makes it real fun.

No gig next week (plus it's my once a month bowling night). Our next gig is a mid-day deal at a farmers market (Nov. 24th).

Well I got myself a real hum-dinger this Friday. I am in an Americana band and we have had a date booked this Friday on the East side of the city. Dummy me tells my new band (2nd project) I am free that night 11/16 and the other band plays on 11/6..OPPS! looked at the date wrong.

So BL of second band gets us a gig at a Rock club on the West side of the city on 11/16...now I am double booked. Lucky for me the first gig starts at 10pm and is over about 12am. The second gig starts late and the owner said get over there quick and it should be ok. I have about a 25 minute drive to the Westside and then will run in and throw myself and rig onstage to play about 1am...Whew! Wish me luck I will need it.

Wow...I have a gig tonight that is three days short of a two year layoff. It's a new project with a different vibe than anything most of the members have been a part of before....so we're all really curious how this will play out. It's a bit unconventional for modern rock as we slip in hints of so many genres without trying, but maybe it has enough of the mainstream trappings that it might could get a bit of traction.

Yeah, a bit nervous...not about playing, but about seeing how the general public reacts to what I've been working on for the past 21 months. We have rehearsed the crap out of this short 30 min set, and of course we're proud of it, but will it translate? We know we can execute the songs at a fairly high level, but will the crowd like it?

If anyone is interested...Atara is who we are. Wish us luck!

Well, bitter sweet gig tonight at one of our usual spots on the rotation. This could be my last show with a cool cover band I've been with for a while now, as my house is for sale and I'm moving my gang down to Austin, TX. On a side note, if anyone is in the Temecula area (San Diego / L.A. are both a bit of a drive) and might be interested in taking my place, send me a pm. I'll get some photos up later tonight and can give you some band info.

The first show of this project went off well enough.

The venue had a small stage and we had too much gear. The stage created low end reverb like I've never heard before....it sounded like we were riding a locomotive through a mountain tunnel on stage, but thankfully the FOH sound was good. Personally I had a few issues. I didn't eat well that day and didn't have a chance to get some bananas...so add a bit of adrenaline and it was hand cramp city about 1/2 way through our set. It didn't shut me down, but boy it was tough to play with any finesse. I hope I didn't sound as stiff as I felt it did.

All that said, we had the crowds attention and received great feedback through the set. The nicest part was that not a soul was sitting in the bar room during our set but were out front of the stage....awesome feeling considering very few had ever heard a single song of ours. The only ones I noticed walking out was the following band when we announced two songs left.

We received plenty of praise and complements after the set from other bands on the bill, people we know who we've kept this mostly under wraps from, and complete strangers. It sure was nice to get the ego payoff after putting in so much work for the past two years.

We also were able to get a couple tentative shows set up in the near future with the other bands at other venues.

I'm a happy bassist and things are looking up!

Got an unwanted gig tomorrow. Band I quit 2 1/2 years ago asked me to sub, doing music for a silent movie from 2005 at an arts festival. Today it turns out soundcheck is at 1:30 PM, start time 11:15 PM. We'll see how it goes. At least I snuck a slowed-down version of the synth motif from a 2 Unlimited hit into one of the scenes.

Show tonight at Blessings Tavern in Colonie with the cover band. They're still looking for a new bassist, so I'm still with 'em.

Apparently quite a cramped performance area. Eh, it's money.

Went OK, crowd was decent, but my homemade DB piezo apparently died. That's really bad for the soundguys when there's no breaks between songs, but they just dropped an extra wireless mic on a stand on the stage and I don't know if anyone else noticed that the bass signal ever went missing.

Conversation on the way out:

Random guy: "Did you maybe sing a song by Marek Grechuta at another festival?"
Singer: "No, definitely wasn't me"
Me: "Yeah, that must have been another singer. Probably an uglier one."
Singer: "Definitely uglier. And older, too."

We had a good laugh over that.

Had a gig at a farmers market yesterday. Tips only, but we were fed quite well. First gig with new guitarist (replaced the previous one). The new guy is a good player, he just needs to turn the volume down a notch.................or five.
