Firsst gig in three years coming up, a classic rock set list with 28 songs, for the birthday bash of the key player's wife. Last rehearsal was yesterday, after which I left my gear at the practice pad to be loaded into my car on Saturday morning:

1974 Telecaster Bass -check-
1980s G & L SB-2 tuned one step down -check-
Ampeg Micro VR rig with two AV210 cabs -check, check, check-
Speaker cables -check, check-
Power cable -check-
Presonus compressor with wall wart -check, check-
Instrument and patch cables -check, check-
Mandolin with inserted cable -check-
Mandolin pick -check-
Earplugs -check-

At home, getting the rest of the stuff together:

BBE DI for mandolin with wall wart -check, check-
XLR cable -check-
Another instrument cable -check-
Floor tuner -check-
Another tuner, for mandolin -check-
Stands for the basses -check, check-
Double gig bag -check-
Duct tape -check-
Printed cheat sheet -check-

Am I well prepared or just a tad nervous???

Best of luck, preacher!

I do the same checklist-type thing before every gig. Always forget the duct tape, though...spaghetti at the end of the night. :\

Thanks! I think it's actually a good sign that I have the heebie-jeebies two days prior... And the duct tape was there at the bottom of the bag, I would totally have forgotten.

Apparently he didn't realize we were opening for a national act until yesterday, and the pressure seemed to get to him, but he said he was still up for going out with us, so I really hope he does well. I've known him for years and have all the faith in him, but I hope he doesn't decide at the last second that he's not ready.

Also (pardon me for letting the teenager show in my writing), there's another band playing between us and Great White, and their drummer and I have been talking about going out soon, but we won't have seen each other until this show. She's going to be in the audience when I'm on stage. Talk about nerves...
A week later, checkin' in. The gig went really well and my buddy Rick absolutely KILLED the keys (in a good way), even though he seemed a bit nervous to come onstage. A few unexpected family members made it as well! Unfortunately not many pictures were taken, but here's the best one:

Gig done, I think with all the flubs and guest members screwing up structure in some songs, we kept the beat going and peole had fun on the dance floor. This was my second ever gig on bass.

Hey, it's cash.
Gig went well, I had fun with it, no pressure.

Got another round of "we'll miss you"s and "you're impossible to replace"s from followers and family members of the band who missed us last gig.

My replacement showed up to watch. Apparently the band made him come. The rhythm guitarist/musical director said they did this to "show him how it was done." I guess I am okay at this bass playing thing.

One lady from the audience was dancing to almost every song, and halfway thru the first set asked for a tambourine. For some reason, she was given one. Argh. People with no sense of rhythm should not be given percussion...and this kept up thru the second set...

Anyway, after the gig I told the band that I was still available to sub when needed. I also told them not to settle for someone who was just showing up to collect a few bucks every two weeks or so. They're much better than that.

Here's a vid from Friday of us covering Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade"...the quality is just alright (mix was a little bass-heavy, especially the kick and toms), but you'll get the gist of it!

The Social Call covers "Bulls on Parade"

We are laying low for the cold weather as always.
Hitting the clubs again starting Jan 26 booked out already to 7-13-13 going to be a busy year. Good luck to everyone. RTS

Man I'm seeing a lot of success stories. I can't be the only one having mediocre gigs! Just kidding glad to see people are doing well. I recently had a gig (this past Friday) where the booking agent of the venue forgot to put us on the calendar so the sound guy never showed up. Somehow we pulled it off though (other band luckily had a PA system). I thought it was an 'ok' show. Been having a lot of ok shows lately :/

Haha, right... this is a hobby project so gigs are sporadic. I tried to sweet-talk one of the managers at work to book us for an upcoming all-hands event but then I found out the date is not compatible for my shcedule, so yes, it may be another 3 years, who knows?

I like practicing for a performance, it gives a whole new level of intensity to the whole effort.

Rust P, as long as you are rocking the bottom it is a good thing. Way back when I took off nearly 10 years of not playing live. Doing the raise the kids thing because I as Aerosmith put it "I didn't want to miss a thing". But as soon as they were in their teens the itch and chance came up to play live again and I just fell right back into place. Only like you because I never put it down. RTS

Got our first show of 2013 coming up on Sat. Small stage but tons of people and we only need to play till 12Am so and early night. Looking forward to this one a lot of new songs added to the set list first time we are going to get together to play them as a band the excitement is building as always we are moving headlong into the crash and burn or play the hell out of it scenario yeah as i have mention in the past the band members never see each other till the shows so no band rehearsal ever! We took 6 weeks off for the holidays but it's back to the smokey bars as of Saturday.

I can't decide if I missed the action or enjoyed the time off more - but I can say that I'm looking forward to plugging in the bass to that amp and finding new ways to make the bottom end sound like it is the main focus of the music.

(even though I know in my heart that everyone comes to hear the beautiful lead singer who literally sings like an angel!!)

Long Live Rock.

Hello all,
After some time lurking this website watching videos, admiring collections, and laughing at some of the stories in this thread I decided it was finally time for me to join. Tonight is my bands first "headlining" gig since I joined this summer. We've done a number of open mic/jams and two fundraiser type event where we got to play about an hour at most. Tonight we have about 25-30 songs lined up for around 3 hours. Super excited to get out and play, even took off work today to get all packed up and ready. Supposed to snow though tonight so we might only have an audience of 6, regardless gonna be a great time!

Tonight's gig will be acoustic only. Leaving all the beasts at home! But it'll be nice to plug the old Fender Acoustic Bass into the board and hold down the low end when I'm not so worried about "my tone".

Acoustic does present a certain freedom in my world. Plus I can do lots of alternative runs that wouldn't sound as good when plugged in and amplified!

All I have to do is stay awake till 2am now.......and then be back on stage at church at 6:30am in the morning with the Les Paul and 12-string in hand.

Yep, it's gonna be one of those weekends!!

Okay just checking in. We had decent weather other cold as heck. I got to the gig at 8:15 for a 8:30 load time. Set up went well no problems. Gear: Fender P to CS3 boss compressor to my bass driver Di out to Bose Tower two Subs. Sound was not overly compressed just enough to smooth out everything. Bass driver set to SVT amp modeling.
Gig started on time 9:30 place was packed had them up and dancing early on. We did two new songs that went over very well so we will be adding them to this years set list. We closed up the show at 12:30 and I was home by 1:30am. We are taking off for the rest of the winter months thankfully and we have our next gig on April 6th. which starts our every weekend till Sept so far schedule.

sample of the show Sat night

It's been a while between posts!

After some crazy-fun gigs over Christmas and New Years, my band is kicking off 2013 with a main support slot with Evermore this Friday night. Not sure how big they ever were in the US, UK, and Europe, but they were/are pretty much a household name down here in Australia.

Should be a lot of fun!
