Conversation w/Soundman, last night's gig

Last night we did an opening set for a local alt.country band who had an upright bass player. Just a tiny G-K MB150 running through the PA; stage right looked real empty.

So I says to the soundman, I says:

"You know, what we need over here is a refrigerator carton all painted up to look like an SVT."

His reply: "That's a great idea. I'll even go outside to your car with you and help you carry it in. We can mike it, too."

This led to a real good converation about bands who actually DO bring SVT's into this very, very small club. But that's another story..

I can do you one better than that guy: I don’t even use a bass amp!

You know, this could be a great business idea - kinda like that company that makes fake appliances and stuff to put in the furniture at furniture store. You could line the back wall of your stage with fake Marshall stacks and a row of fake SVTs with fake 8x10s that look like they contravene the START II treaty and really be playing through a little combo tucked inside a fake cab. You get the looks of an 80s metal concert while still keeping your hearing.....

Hmm, gotta go talk to an business major and figure out how to make money on this ASAP.

When I have seen large touring metal bands (Slayer, BLS, etc.) that is what they did. Depending on the angle and light you could see past the grille cloth into an empty cabinet. Once back stage a closer inspection revealed there was only one or two working amps and cabinets, the rest were just empty speaker cabinets and heads. The funny part is in Zakk's case someone actually disassembled the Marshall heads and left the metal case in the cabinet so they would look real too but have no guts. Slayer only had speaker cabinets if memory serves me correctly. I'm sure the roadies love that - I hate carying gear!
