Cool gig tonight.

My band played at a venue in the Gaslamp of San Diego tonight. We played there two weeks ago to a smallish crowd (it was Veteran's Day). Tonight, wads of people came in and we rocked the joint. Our band is relatively new, and we're still in the process of making like Archie Bell and the Drells (tightening up). We were the best we've ever been. People were grooving and throwing cash in the tip spitoon.

Anyway, the last time we played there, I took my Shuttle 9.0 and AE212, plus backup amp and loads of other crud. I noticed they had an old Carvin BR600 115 combo as the provided backline, but I didn't use it. However, the reggae band that followed us used it, and it sounded halfway decent (it was patched into the PA and subs). So I decided tonight I'd just take my basses and my Vornado.

I looked at the EQ knobs on the amp, and it was set pretty much flat, but the graphic EQ was set for dub ... really weird. The faders were set in a perfectly straight diagonal line, with the 50 hz all the way up, dropping down to the 5Khz at off. Fortunately, the amp has a graphic EQ defeat, so I just switched it off. Now, as you know, I'm not a fan of 15s, but I gave it a shot.

I played the first set with my Yamaha TRB5P-II. I was really surprised at the nice, full tone I got out of the amp with just the right amount of mid punch. It actually didn't suck. I'm sure the Yammy played a big role in the sound, though. I've been digging the tone of the bass at practices lately. The Yamaha hadn't been out of its case in a long time. Second set, I broke out my F Bass, and it ruled, too. It has a natural mid-rich sound that really filled the room.

Anyway, I'm sure the venue will ask us back. We've played a couple Mondays for them, so now we're going to use that chip to get a weekend night. I could tell management was really happy with the crowd we drew in off the sidewalk. There were a few folks that came looking for us who had been at our last show there.

All-in-all, a great night.

The band leader set out a Carvin guitar combo amp for practice the last two weeks. His father had purchased it (along with a high end Les Paul with self tuners) to noodle around with. The lead player sounded great, especially through the humbucker pickup on some old Clapton we were playing.

As far as I'm concerned, they both could ditch their 85 lb+ Fender Twins and leave them in the 1970s. There's a couple of other older Carvin pieces around the practice room that are reliable, but don't travel to gigs.
