Cool phone call

I have a cabinet up for sale on Craigslist. I just got a call from a guy named Steve asking about it. The area code on the caller ID was 415 (San Fran). I'm in central Illinois, so I was like W.T.F??? Turns out he is the bassist touring with the Manzarek-Rogers band, which features Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist from the Doors. They are playing in my town tomorrow night. Steve told me if I bring my cab to their sound check tomorrow so he can check it out, he will get me in the show and I can meet Ray too. Heck, even if he doesn't buy the cab, I get to see what is sure to be a killer show and meet Ray Manzarek. Not a bad return on a free classified ad...

It sure helps to list an off-CL email address, or phone no. in those ads!

You gotta tell us how it went.....60 yr old Doors fanboy here!!!

I was just listening to the In Concert album today and thought to myself that Ray Manzarek was just as important to the Doors as Jim....and not to slight Robbie Krieger and John Densmore...

Cool indeed. Ask Ray if he had any idea what Jim was talking about.

It would be kinda interesting to hear why the Doors never ante'd up and added a bass player. I know that Jerry Scheff did studio work for them (Riders on the Storm most mentioned) and there was the story of how Lonnie Mack (an early electric rock guitarist) played bass on Morrison Hotel (Roadhouse Blues and Maggie Magill). Ray thumped along on that Fender bass keyboard for shows and their first album. I guess they felt Ray had the low end covered and knew their direction.

I have to say it did not prove to be as exciting as I had hoped, but a cool experience nonetheless...
Steve the bass player called yetserday afternoon to say he would be unable to transport the cabinet as he had originally thought, so he couldn't buy it. Therefore, I didn't get to go to the sound check as planned, but he comp'd some tix for me, my wife, my guitar palyer and his wife. I thought that was pretty cool of him.
We all stayed after the show to meet Ray and we got some pics with him, etc. He seemed to be a pretty down-to-earth guy. I'll post pics as soon as I can get them from my buddy's camera.
As far as the show goes, they were all really talented musicians. I assumed they would rock way more Doors tunes than they did. All we got was Crystal Ship and Riders on the Storm. Everything else was off of an upcoming blues album. They stopped the show about halfway thru so people could ask Ray questions which I also thought was pretty cool.
