We used to have a steel player that played in a a very famous band (household name). He was an excellent all around musician, he had incredible ears and his ideas and input was fantastic. But he was the most racist, sexist, foul mouthed bigot I have ever had to deal with. We fired him after the 3rd gig. We just couldn't ignore it... and we tried for a while because he was really good.
Our new steel player is a really decent person and a good player.

Went to a country jam session and our band got up to do a couple. Did Highway Patrol, Two More Bottles of Wine, Jackson and one other (that escapes me now!) It was our first outing in the current configuration and we got a pretty good reception. Steel player from the house band sat in... |

He was a really nice guy, played a Sho-Bud pedal steel. Easy going personality but in all honestly he struggled with playing the thing and mostly made noises that sounded like a live cat being run through a meat grinder.
Pedal steel is a specialty and if you have a good one, you've got something really cool.

Unfortunately he was a prime example of someone who sacrificed social/people skills to take his playing to a very high level. Probably the best musician I've ever worked with and we fired him. The last gig we played with him I had to step in between him & the band leader on their way out to the parking lot to duke it out. On our first break of the night no less.
It's the longest he's spent in one band in the last 25 years. Keeps getting fired for the same reason, Jekyll & Hyde personality.
But when he was on, man it was sweet.

Joined a startup country cover group late last year, and have loved every minute of it. I can't say I have only one 'favorite' that we play; Seminole Wind, Folsom Prison, Grundy County Auction, I Don't Want This Night To End are a few that I really enjoy playing.
As far as strings, I just strung up my bass with Fender Flats about 2 weeks ago and love it. I had flats on another bass with my other band (prog rock/metal), and while I really liked everything about it, it wasn't cutting it in that situation.

| | | Speaking of steel players, I auditioned for a regional touring gig yesterday. They didn't have an actual steel player, but the dude on the Tele was insanely talented. I've worked with tons of git-dudes that can fake some steel licks, but this dude was by far the best I've ever worked with. He was using a Dunlop volume pedal, and I could have swore he had a B-bender as well but nope! Two hands, two feet, and a Fender Twin. Seriously, wow....and I don't throw out statements like that very often Oh, BTW, I've been a gigging country dude off and on for over two decades now. I've gotta figure out how to post pix one of these days....

No Ma'am, I'm not as talented as the other guitarist in the band. That's why he gets six strings and I only get four.

Great for adding a little texture and some simple slide licks to country and blues songs. Haven't used it on stage for a while but it is a cool thing to have around for impromptu jams at the house when there are already too many guitar and bass players there.

Here's a video of us in action last weekend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGQKJ...f6QZ4A&index=9 |

Favorite song to play, ummm: Blame it on Waylon (Josh Thompson) is fun , Hip to my heart (The Band Perry) is also fun, but I think my fav right now is Whisltin' Dixie (Randy Houser)!
A Little info: I never thought that I would be a country bassist. Back at the end of 1996, I joined a country band as "Therapy". I had crushed and severed my pinky on my left hand & did a little damage to my ring finger also. I have played in many different bands over the years (Metal, Rock, Top 40 etc and to my surprise, the country crowd was just a lot of fun!
So give me a number please!!
And in case some of you haven't seen: jeepin_jer1's Country Tab Collection
