Yah, I should string up one of my basses with flats. I don't much care for 5 strings though - anybody playing Country strung BEAD? I hear tell you're not allowed to play on the "G" anyways .

Cool might be dusting off my hat, boots and shirts soon. I will sit in with my old country band tonight.

Using flats on my 4 strings but still using roundwounds on the 5 strings...too many problems finding flats that work with a 35 inch scale.
May be looking at an upright bass soon. Makes sense for playing the older country material.

For the older stuff I'm not sure I've ever used the G.

However, on the newer stuff, I use it a fair amount. Like Country Girl Shake It For Me, you can't do the ending without using it.

Can I get a number? Just quit country/classic rock band last band Saturday, but auditioning for a 100% country band on Sunday.

Current fave song, George Straits version of "A Showman's Life". Working on a ton of new stuff for the audition.

I play at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC in The Bounty Hunters.
My 3rd season coming up March 1.
We play six nights a week and don't take group breaks! I have developed "trucker bladder "!
We play requests for tips all night and drink absurd amounts of beer! Mostly old country, lots of outlaw, new country, and classic rock tunes. My fave song is Ring Of Fire when I get to double on horn parts with my trumpet! I use P basses, J basses, 5 string fretted & fretless, hollowbody, and use a Zoom B3 as a pre into an EV LiveX 15" powered monitor! Sweet!
And as always, sport a porkpie hat!

I've been to Myrtle Beach many time, but never been to The Bowery. Even know some guys that have played there before. I'll have to check it out next summer.

Hey, heard from a pedal steel player but he doesn't like hats - is he havin' me on or is that even possible?

Yep, Alan Jackson's pedal steel player (Robbie Flint) is from around these parts, I played with him in a band back in the 70's. He doesn't like hats either...strange phenomenon.

Pedal steel players come in one of two types;

Amazing musicians who add that special "something" that most country bands don't have

OR

Masters of auditory destruction whose playing resembles nails on a chalkboard multiplied by 1,000.

Truism. We have a pretty good steel player, and it really adds to the authentic feel and sound of the band.

Well, "Hatless Bob" seems like the real deal - his BL just retired to Florida and he's too old to carry on hisself - got some serious creds that check out. He'll at least come down and jam once in a while - who knows? While you can do Modern Country without a Steel and Banjo it jus' don't sound right to me .

The band I play with has a really good steel player. He also plays guitar, fiddle, banjo & mandolin. Was with a touring pro name artist for years. Now he just plays local 2 to 3 gigs a month. Such talent. Up the road from me is a small guitar shop & they make Emmons pedal steel guitars.
